Groups have separate channels within a discussion and cannot see the other groups\u2019 discussions, instructors can see all groups. The students respond to a discussion using the full text editor with all the formatting and attachment options.&nbsp; They can attach the contribution or cut and paste it into the text editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before creating the Discussion please create the Groups Set for the groups you wish to set up the file exchange for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#Section1\">Create a Discussion<\/a> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#Section2\">Assign Groups&nbsp;<\/a> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#student\">Student view<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"section3\"><a id=\"Section1\"><\/a>Create a Discussion for use as a file exchange<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Decide on a good place on the Template for students to access the file exchange, this could sit on top of the Learning Materials or Assessment sections if it is something that is going to be used throughout the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Click on the purple plus sign and select Create from the add content menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select Discussion form the Create Item panel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-3\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"419\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2024\/10\/image-11.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23646\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"367\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2024\/10\/image-12.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23648\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ast-global-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ast-global-color-5-background-color has-background\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>The New Discussion screen will open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Rename the discussion to something meaningful e.g. &#8220;Seminar Group File Exchange&#8221;. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add a prompt or instructions on how you expect this space to be used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1072\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2024\/10\/image-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2024\/10\/image-8.png 1072w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2024\/10\/image-8-768x419.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1072px) 100vw, 1072px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key settings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When using the Discussion feature for a groups file exchange leave all the options that limit students ability to view, post or edit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do select Display on Course Content page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"415\" height=\"607\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2024\/10\/image-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23633\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ast-global-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ast-global-color-5-background-color has-background\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"section3\"><a id=\"Section2\"><\/a>Assign Groups<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is recommended that you create your groups first, see our <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/creating-groups\/\">Creating Groups guide<\/a> for more details. Once the groups have been created, you can use the Reuse Groups function to associate the groups with the Discussion.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>In the group students field click on the down arrow icon <strong>(a)<\/strong> to reveal the menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All the Group Sets on the course will be listed under<strong> Reuse groups<\/strong> <strong>(b)<\/strong>. Group Sets contain a set of groups. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only groups that are visible to students will be available to select and assign to the discussion.
