Use this video to see the options and suggested learning activities for each format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Embedded Media titled: Padlet formats with music\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/reading.yuja.com\/V\/Video?v=829129&amp;node=4427869&amp;a=203509930&amp;preload=false\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a summary (and examples) of the format options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/universityofreading\/wall-example-paired-discussion-task-what-are-your-top-recomm-p2ws5d51gtp815nc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wall<\/a>:<\/strong> posts will be compactly arranged into a \u201cbrick-like\u201d layout.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/universityofreading\/sections-example-debate-do-you-think-that-board-game-design--gz481r0jtbnsilml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Columns<\/a>:<\/strong> turning on Sections allows you to add column headings (to a Wall or Grid) or row headings (to a Timeline).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/md916165_\/grid-example-storyboard-a-game-narrative-rgimllewekajuiug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grid<\/a>:<\/strong> creates uniform spacing between each post.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/musicmama1\/bucket-list-destinations-iobznf34fnddlkxw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Table:<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>Arrange fields into structured tables. This format will create a board in a table-like layout where each post you publish will create a row and each field within that post creates a column.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/universityofreading\/canvas-example-what-ethical-issues-can-arise-when-designing--igkb3cpw922ie5y5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freeform<\/a>:<\/strong> posts can be positioned freeform anywhere on the board; they can be resized, connected with lines and labelled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rows<\/strong>: posts will appear in a clean horizontal layout (post size is wider than in a grid layout)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/universityofreading\/timeline-example-group-1-task-add-posts-to-represent-the-his-q325z0zt9bia0ixe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Timeline<\/a>:<\/strong> posts appear along a horizontal line.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/universityofreading\/stream-example-back-channel-for-lecture-q-a-iukperiqqrx2ycl3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stream<\/a>:<\/strong> posts arranged in a top-to-bottom feed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/universityofreading\/map-example-what-are-the-origins-of-your-favourite-board-gam-2q085mzwvd93kwfl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Map<\/a>:<\/strong> posts can be pinned to any location on a map background.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively you could create a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/universityofreading\/example-sandbox-collaborative-mindmap-whiteboard-msfkp6i4f48rl5kb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sandbox<\/a><\/strong> this format is like a collaborative whiteboard, great for mind mapping, post-it note activities, etc. For more information on Sandboxes see Padlet&#8217;s guide <a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.help\/l\/en\/article\/8izrmuejli-what-is-sandbox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What is Sandbox?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"share\">How to share padlets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before sharing your padlet, open it and choose the share setting permissions. It is not possible to embed padlets into a PowerPoint, so you should open the padlet in a browser window, to display to the class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-12\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:0;padding-left:0\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow\">\n<p>If you would like to prevent students from adding to the padlet after the class or on a specific date you can use the <strong>freeze board <\/strong>function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Click on the three dot menu on the right-hand side panel, this will open the Additional options menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Select Freeze board to immediately freeze the board. A &#8220;Frozen&#8221; icon will appear next to the padlet title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively you could use the Automations option to <strong>set a time for the padlet to freeze or unfreeze<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2026\/01\/image-13.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28058\" width=\"281\" height=\"389\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ast-global-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ast-global-color-5-background-color has-background\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"add\">How to add padlets to Blackboard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please be aware you will need to refresh your course to view padlets added via Blackboard Content Market. <\/strong><br><br>There are two options for sharing padlets via Blackboard:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Option 1 &#8211;<\/strong> as a link (e.g. via a content folder): <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Locate your Blackboard course and open the folder you wish to populate,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the purple &#8216;create&#8217; button and select Content Market from the dropdown list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From the dropdown list, select Content Market and choose Padlet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This action opens a window displaying your &#8216;Recent&#8217; padlets, choose from the list or select &#8216;Make&#8217; to create a new one. If you cannot see your padlet in the list, refresh the page or reopen the Content Market.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you have selected your padlet, close the Content Market window to return to the course. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The padlet will be added to your course folder as a link. You can edit the display title and description. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Embedded Media titled: Padlet: Add to a Blackboard course\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/reading.yuja.com\/V\/Video?v=922354&amp;node=4964947&amp;a=82155995\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Option 2<\/strong> &#8211; as an embedded item (e.g. via an Ultra Document):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Create an Ultra Document or open an existing one<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select &#8216;Add Content&#8217; and open the Content Market (click the plus button in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/2023\/09\/22\/ultra-text-editor\/\">Blackboard Ultra Editor<\/a> toolbar). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From the Content Market, choose Padlet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This action opens a window displaying your &#8216;Recent&#8217; padlets, choose from the list or select &#8216;Make&#8217; to create a new one. If you cannot see your padlet in the list, refresh the page or reopen the Content Market.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you have selected your padlet, close the Content Market window to return to the Ultra Document. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The padlet will display as an embedded item.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"options\">What are the other options for controlling access to a padlet?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on your planned learning activity, you may find the following options useful to control access:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Setting<\/strong><\/td><td>&nbsp; &nbsp; <strong>What does it allow?<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\u2018<strong>Visitors with a link<\/strong>\u2019<\/td><td>This setting can be enabled alongside the default permission &#8216;University of Reading members&#8217;. It allows padlets to be accessed by anyone who has the link or QR code, users are not required to sign into their university account to access the board. Students will be given the option to use a nickname, psuedo animal name or to login to their university account. Be aware, if this setting is enabled then it is not possible to prevent students linking the padlet content from social media or other external platforms. <br><br>These padlets have the benefit that they can be shared externally and in ad hoc scenarios where this may be needed, however, as they present risks in terms of governing who can access (i.e. if the link is passed on), this setting should only be used where data security and accurate author attribution is not a concern.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\u2018<strong>University of Reading members<\/strong>&#8216;<\/td><td><strong>This default share setting prevents padlets from being accessed externally. This is the recommended way to share padlets with students when anonymity is not required, and is best used when asking students to access the padlet via Blackboard. <\/strong>Students university usernames will be recognised and attributed to posts (you can toggle &#8216;Show\/Hide&#8217; names if wanting to remove display of authors from the board). <br><br>If students are using a device that is not already logged into Blackboard, i.e. access via a QR code scanned by their mobile device, they will see a &#8216;Login&#8217; screen before viewing the padlet (ask students to choose the &#8216;Login with Microsoft&#8217; option).
