This guide will look at the options in the assignment setting on how the attempts can be used to calculate the final mark and how marking with multiple attempts works in the Blackboard Assignment marking screen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#options\">Multiple Attempt Options<\/a> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#marking\">Marking Multiple Attempts<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#calculate\">Calculating Multiple Attempt marks <\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"options\">Multiple Attempt Options <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When Setting up a Blackboard assignment, you may choose to allow multiple attempts so that students can submit a draft copy or revise some elements before the deadline. Usually these are marked based on the final submission made. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Attempts to mark option only appears if Attempts allowed is more than 1. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Attempts to mark<\/strong> options are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Last attempt &#8211; the final mark will be calculated using the mark given to the Last attempt. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First attempt &#8211; the final mark will be calculated using the mark given to the First attempt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All attempts &#8211; the final mark will be calculated using all the attempts by highest mark, lowest mark or the average mark. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"369\" height=\"388\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2025\/01\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25249\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ast-global-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ast-global-color-5-background-color has-background\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">All attempts set-up<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you select mark <strong>All attempts<\/strong> an additional field will appear allowing you to choose how you would like to calculate the final mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Final mark calculation<\/strong> drop down menu gives the options of calculate the final mark by using:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>average mark<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>highest mark<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lowest mark<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"375\" height=\"259\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2024\/10\/All-attempts-which-to-mark.png\" alt=\"Blackboard Assignment settings showing All attempts to mark selected and drop down menu of Final mark calculation options. \" class=\"wp-image-24333\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ast-global-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ast-global-color-5-background-color has-background\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>This option allows for a workflow where students submit a number of drafts and receive feedback before submitting the next draft or final submission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ast-global-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ast-global-color-5-background-color has-background\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"marking\">Marking Multiple Attempts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When marking multiple attempts, the Needs Marking will show you the latest submission. If you are marking the Last attempt only, it will only show you these attempts in the needs marking workflow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which attempt displays in marking screen?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The attempt displaying in the marking screen when you open the student&#8217;s submission is dependent on the <strong>Attempts to mark <\/strong>setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>First attempt &#8211; the first attempt by the student will display &#8211; you can toggle to all other attempts in the attempts list<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Last attempt &#8211; the latest attempt by the student will display &#8211; you can toggle to all other attempts in the attempts list<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the <strong>Last attempt<\/strong> is selected any new attempts will show as <strong>an attempt to mark<\/strong>, even if an earlier attempt has been marked. For each one you can add summary feedback, complete a rubric or manually add the mark into the mark field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be able to change the <strong>Attempts to mark<\/strong> setting during the marking process if you need to change from first attempt to last attempt etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If using the <strong>All attempts workflow<\/strong> where students are submitting drafts before a final submission you will need to post the attempt marks so that students may view the feedback provided.  You can do this with individual marks during the marking process or all at once at the end of the first round of marking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ast-global-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ast-global-color-5-background-color has-background\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"calculate\">Calculating the mark<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For Last attempt or First attempt the calculation is straight forward.
