AI Conversations has two components:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Role Play<\/strong> \u2013 students take part in a conversation with a persona you define (e.g., a historical figure, legal expert, or fictional client).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Socratic Questioning<\/strong> \u2013 students explore an idea or concept through structured critical thinking prompts, based on a question you provide.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The AI Conversation tool is unlike traditional generative AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot. Rather than producing static content for students, it creates an interactive space for them to practice, explore ideas, and reflect through structured dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"How-to-set-up-an-AI-Conversation\">How to set up an AI Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Both types of AI Conversation follow a similar setup process. You will be prompted to enter:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A title and description for your students&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The type of conversation and a persona (Role Play or Socratic)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Key details like a scenario (for Role Play) and starting question (for Socratic)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>From the purple plus in your course, choose <strong>Create<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"316\" height=\"261\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2025\/07\/Create-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27124\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Select <strong>AI Conversation<\/strong>. There might be a short wait while Blackboard loads the AI Conversation tool. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"292\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2025\/06\/image-43.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27037\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Choose either <strong>Socratic questioning<\/strong> or <strong>Role-play. <\/strong>The following guidance covers both options in turn.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Socratic-questioning\">Socratic questioning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>If choosing Socratic questioning, you should enter the question which students will be responding to:&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"757\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2026\/03\/SQ-question-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28462\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Clicking the <strong>Conversation constraints<\/strong> drop-down, you can set a maximum number of exchanges between the student and the AI persona. This helps give the activity a clear structure and prevents conversations continuing indefinitely. Students are notified of how many responses they have remaining. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Next<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Edit image<\/strong>: You can provide your own image, use Unsplash, or generate an image for the persona&#8217;s avatar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the name for the persona. If you\u2019re using an historical figure, use this name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Briefly describe the persona\u2019s personality traits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can use the sliding scale to adjust the complexity of the persona\u2019s responses. Choose traits carefully and preview the conversation to avoid bias or otherwise inappropriate content. You could ask <a href=\"https:\/\/copilot.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microsoft Copilot<\/a> to suggest the key personality traits for your persona if you need inspiration.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Auto-generate-AI-Conversations\">Auto-generate AI Conversations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You also have the option to auto-generate both types of AI Conversations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>Create an AI Conversation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose <strong>Auto-generate conversation<\/strong>:&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"376\" height=\"84\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2025\/06\/image-45.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27039\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Auto-generate conversation settings panel allows you to refine your suggested conversations (For more detail, please see our guide &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/blackboard-ai-design-assistant-general-settings\">Blackboard AI Design Assistant \u2013 General settings<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Enter a description text prompt (limited to 2000 characters). The more detail you include here, the more focused and relevant the generated conversations will be.&nbsp;(See how to write effective prompts for <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/blackboard-ai-design-assistant-ai-prompt-writing\">Blackboard AI Design Assistant &#8211; AI Prompt writing<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can add content from your course to help generate the conversation. This is optional.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose whether you want Socratic questions or role-plays. Leave as <strong>Inspire me<\/strong> for&nbsp; a selection of both types.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose the other options as appropriate.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Generate<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose the conversation as appropriate and&nbsp;Click <strong>Add<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If none of the options are appropriate, you can choose <strong>Generate<\/strong> (7) to try again.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"624\" height=\"302\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2025\/06\/image-46.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27040\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Tips-for-effective-use\">Tips for effective use with students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating an<strong> effective<\/strong> AI Conversation (Role play or Socratic questioning) requires careful thought beforehand. We recommend the following tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Review the guide: <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support-students\/student-guide-blackboard-ai-design-assistant-ai-conversations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TEL Support for Students &#8211; AI Conversations<\/a> (consider sharing this link with your students, or using the advice contextually in your own activity instructions).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Preview the conversation: <\/strong>You should always preview an AI conversation before releasing the activity to students. AI tools can hallucinate and introduce bias. It&#8217;s important to make sure that your instructions are clear and that the AI persona responds in an expected and appropriate way.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Choose the personality traits with consideration: <\/strong>The personality traits significantly shape the interactions. Choose them carefully and preview the conversation to avoid bias or otherwise inappropriate content. You could ask Copilot to suggest the key personality traits for your persona if you need inspiration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keep it the personas relevant<\/strong>: Choose personas that add value to the task, e.g. someone students wouldn\u2019t usually get access to.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Help students get started:<\/strong> The AI Conversations tool usually begins the conversation with the prompt: <em>\u201cPlease share your initial thoughts.\u201d<\/em> This dos not provide clear instruction to tell students they are expected to do, especially if they are unsure of their role in the scenario. To support engagement, it is helpful to demonstrate the tool in advance and show how to begin a response. Providing a few example openers can help set expectations and make it easier for students to get started.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Give interaction guidance:<\/strong> Students may not be familiar with how to interact with AI in a learning context. A short prompt like \u201cTry to ask at least three follow-up questions\u201d or \u201cImagine you\u2019re preparing for an interview\u201d can help.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make it purposeful:<\/strong> Use the tool to encourage critical thinking or practise specific skills, rather than as a general discussion or content generator.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Socrative prompt questions need an open structure<\/strong>: A good open-ended starting question invites debate or exploration, rather than a factual answer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ast-global-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ast-global-color-5-background-color has-background\" \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before using this tool ensure you have familiarised yourself with the practical and ethical considerations in the &#8216;Getting starting with Blackboard AI Design Assistant&#8216; guide What is the AI Conversation Tool?
