These generated questions are a variety of formats and can be used for both formative and summative assessments.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Tips-for-effectively-using-the-tool\">Tips for effectively using the tool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Select course content items and use detailed descriptions to generate focused questions that explore concepts at a deeper level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Edit generated questions to fit your tone or student level, and review for accuracy, clarity, and alignment with your learning objectives.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"How-to-use-the-tool\">How to use the tool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#Blackboard-Test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blackboard Test<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#Question-Banks\">Question Banks&nbsp;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Blackboard-Test\"><strong>Blackboard Test&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1:&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>From the Test creation panel, click the purple + icon to open the question-type menu. Select \u201cAuto-generate question\u201d from the list.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"526\" height=\"334\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2025\/07\/image-9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27082\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A set of questions will be generated automatically, based upon the title of your module or the title you give your test. We recommend reviewing these questions carefully before choosing to generate a new set, as generating new questions will permanently replace the original ones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Edit settings on the setting panel on the generation screen so that the AI Design Assistant can generate more relevant and focused questions.\u00a0(For more detail, please see our guide &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/blackboard-ai-design-assistant-general-settings\">Blackboard AI Design Assistant \u2013 General settings<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>Enter an optional description to provide a <strong>text prompt<\/strong> (See how to write effective prompts for <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/blackboard-ai-design-assistant-ai-prompt-writing\">Blackboard AI Design Assistant &#8211; AI Prompt writing<\/a>) to narrow the focus of the questions. The Description field has a character limit of 2000.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Select specific content items to provide context for the AI Design Assistant to use when generating questions.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Select which question types you want to generate. The Inspire Me! option will generate a range of different question types. Or, you can select to only generate the following question types:&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Essay&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Fill in the blank&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Jumbled sentence&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Matching&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Multiple Choice&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>True\/False&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"501\" height=\"178\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2025\/07\/image-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27083\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Use the Complexity slider to adjust the complexity of the generated questions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Moving the slider to the right increases the complexity, making the language more technical and advanced, whilst moving the slider to the left makes the language simpler and more appropriate for students with less prior background knowledge.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Select how many question you want the AI Design Assistant to generate.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Selecting a higher number of questions along with the Inspire Me option will generate a more varied range of example questions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Generating higher numbers of questions will take significantly longer than generating fewer questions, especially when the selected complexity is high.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>Use the Advanced options menu to change the output language of the questions.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>The Generate button will generate a new set of questions based upon the options you have chosen and the content items you have selected for context.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The new set of questions will replace any that have already generated, so it is advised to review and save any questions you want to use before re-generating a new set.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"624\" height=\"138\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2025\/07\/image-7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27080\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li>Tick the boxes against any question that you want to use.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li>Click \u201cAdd to Assessment\u201d to add any ticked questions to your test. Or, cancel the generation process by clicking the \u201cCancel\u201d button&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"508\" height=\"292\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2025\/07\/image-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27081\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have added questions to the Test, you can edit the text by clicking the three-dot menu next to the question title. Then, select \u201cEdit\u201d from the drop-down menu.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"553\" height=\"288\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2025\/07\/image-11.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27084\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Question-Banks\"><strong>Question Banks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Question Banks allow instructors to create, organise, and store a database of questions that can be reused in multiple assessments or exported and shared with others. The AI Design Assistant can be used to generate Question Banks, saving time for instructors.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The link to the Question Banks page is found in the Details &amp; Actions menu visible from the Content area of your Ultra course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Click \u201cManage Banks\u201d to open the\u202fQuestion Banks\u202fpage. This page lists all Question Banks on your course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"624\" height=\"212\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2025\/07\/image-6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27079\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>From the Question Banks page, click the purple + icon. You can regenerate a new set of questions or select questions to add to your bank. Once you have finished, click \u201cAdd to Question Bank\u201d (a). Your new bank will be given a generic title, which you can edit by clicking the title (a).
