{"id":28065,"date":"2026-01-20T15:03:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T15:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/?p=28065"},"modified":"2026-04-28T13:16:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T13:16:17","slug":"turnitin-draft-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/turnitin-draft-coach\/","title":{"rendered":"Turnitin Draft Coach"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Draft Coach?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the University\u2019s Turnitin licence,&nbsp;Draft Coach is an add-in to Microsoft Word&nbsp;that&nbsp;produces&nbsp;a&nbsp;Turnitin Similarity Report&nbsp;based on&nbsp;the text in&nbsp;the document.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&nbsp;allows students to independently generate a Similarity Report&nbsp;to check&nbsp;their work&nbsp;and give them feedback as they write&nbsp;prior to&nbsp;submitting&nbsp;assignments to Blackboard. They can run the check 3 times per document. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Draft Coach&nbsp;uses the new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/guides.turnitin.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/25042947311757-Student-overview-of-the-new-Similarity-Report-experience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Enhanced&nbsp;Similarity Report<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;help students understand the matches they see in their work&nbsp;and learn from these to improve their&nbsp;academic writing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students (and staff) can access Draft Coach by opening their document in Microsoft Word or Word Online, selecting the Turnitin tab, clicking Draft Coach to open the panel, and choosing Similarity Check:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/93\/2026\/02\/image-5.png\" alt=\"Accessing Draft Coach in Word\" class=\"wp-image-8278\" width=\"659\" height=\"312\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does the\u00a0Similarity Report work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Similarity Report, whether generated via Draft Coach or a&nbsp;Turnitin&nbsp;Assignment submission point, simply&nbsp;identifies&nbsp;text in an assignment that matches sources in Turnitin\u2019s databases. (If accessed via Draft Coach, it does not submit the document to Turnitin&#8217;s repository of submitted assignments.) The Similarity Report does not necessarily&nbsp;indicate&nbsp;plagiarism.&nbsp;In this way, students&nbsp;are still required to&nbsp;make decisions about their work when they see the report. Whether a student has plagiarised remains&nbsp;your academic judgement when marking the assignment.&nbsp;For more guidance on using and interpreting the Similarity Report,&nbsp;including what the Turnitin Similarity Report<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grammar and citation tools in Draft Coach\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Draft Coach also includes&nbsp;basic grammar and citation checkers.&nbsp;These general tools&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;provide discipline-specific writing feedback or&nbsp;identify&nbsp;errors for all referencing and citation styles.&nbsp;Students&nbsp;are being directed&nbsp;to use more effective University-supported tools and <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.reading.ac.uk\/study-advice-guides-videos\/academic-integrity\">the guidance from Study Advice.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please&nbsp;advise students to&nbsp;use&nbsp;<strong>Draft Coach for similarity checking only<\/strong>&nbsp;as&nbsp;indicated&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support-students\/turnitin-draft-coach-similarity-checking-before-submission\/\">student guidance on using the tool<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Points to remember\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Draft Coach is for formative use only<\/strong>:&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;a student-facing drafting resource intended to&nbsp;assist&nbsp;academic writing skills before submission.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>You&nbsp;cannot see&nbsp;Similarity Reports or checks generated by Draft Coach<\/strong>:&nbsp;These&nbsp;do&nbsp;<strong>not&nbsp;<\/strong>feed back&nbsp;into&nbsp;Turnitin.&nbsp;You&nbsp;can see a&nbsp;Similarity Report&nbsp;when the assignment is&nbsp;submitted&nbsp;for marking to help&nbsp;you judge&nbsp;its&nbsp;academic integrity.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Draft Coach does&nbsp;not<\/strong><strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><strong>submit&nbsp;to Turnitin\u2019s repository<\/strong>: Running&nbsp;reports via&nbsp;Draft Coach&nbsp;will&nbsp;<strong>not&nbsp;<\/strong>affect the student\u2019s final Turnitin&nbsp;Similarity&nbsp;Report once they&nbsp;submit&nbsp;their&nbsp;assignment.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to support students\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>For step-by-step guidance on accessing and using Draft Coach, signpost students to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support-students\/turnitin-draft-coach-similarity-checking-before-submission\/\">TEL Student guide to using Draft Coach.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Integrate the use of Draft Coach&nbsp;into&nbsp;a relevant&nbsp;module&nbsp;as a formative exercise&nbsp;to offer opportunities to discuss your expectations,&nbsp;guide effective use&nbsp;and tackle common&nbsp;citation&nbsp;mistakes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Remind students that Draft Coach is not a replacement for final Turnitin&nbsp;similarity&nbsp;checks through Blackboard\/Turnitin&nbsp;Assignment&nbsp;submission&nbsp;points in the Blackboard course.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Encourage effective use by suggesting students&nbsp;spread out similarity checks&nbsp;across drafts&nbsp;and use the&nbsp;three available checks&nbsp;meaningfully.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Emphasise that similarity percentages reflect matched text, not necessarily plagiarism, and&nbsp;that correct citation and paraphrasing practices are&nbsp;important.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>For&nbsp;academic
