{"id":28511,"date":"2026-04-28T13:09:53","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T13:09:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/?p=28511"},"modified":"2026-04-28T14:01:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T14:01:41","slug":"blackboard-question-testings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/blackboard-question-testings\/","title":{"rendered":"Blackboard Test Question Settings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Once a Test question has been added to a test there are a number of settings that can be adjusted to suit your needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#points\">Question Points<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#extra\">Extra Credit<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#partial\">Partial Credit<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#bulk\">Bulk edit question points<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#automated\">Automated Feedback<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#metadata\">Name and Tag questions with metadata<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"points\">Question Points<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each question can be given a specific number of points.  The points possible for the test will be the sum of the points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By default each question will have 1 point. This can be altered by clicking on the points field <strong>(a)<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"701\" height=\"171\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2026\/04\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28518\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"extra\">Extra Credit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The extra credit option <strong>(b)<\/strong> will mark the question as an extra credit question.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Extra credit questions are not included in the test&#8217;s points possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A correct answer will give students additional points.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is possible for students to gain more than the maximum points possible by answering extra credit questions correctly. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students can see which questions are extra credit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students can filter the test to see extra credit questions only.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ast-global-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ast-global-color-5-background-color has-background\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"partial\">Allow partial and negative credit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Negative marking is not used at the University of Reading. It is possible to switch on &#8220;Allow partial and negative credit&#8221; without using negative credit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Partial credit will allow you to give as specific percentage of credit to some or all of the distractor responses <strong>(b)<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The percentages do not have to add up to 100.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is possible to stipulate how many options the student can select <strong>(c)<\/strong>. Keeping this to 1 will prevent students gaining additional credit by simply selecting all options.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"751\" height=\"528\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2026\/04\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28521\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ast-global-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ast-global-color-5-background-color has-background\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bulk\">Bulk edit question points<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can edit point values for multiple questions at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1: <\/strong>Click the three-dot menu icon on the test canvas. You can select all questions at once (a) or you can select individual questions. You can filter down to specific question types (b). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3: <\/strong>Enter the new points value into the points box (c). There is a separate text box for correct and incorrect answer feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incorrect answer feedback will also be visible to partial credit responses.  It is possible to paste the same response in both. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"757\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/TEL-Support-Staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2026\/04\/image-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28525\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The point at which students can view the feedback is set in the Tests Settings panel, in the Assessment results section. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>*Please note students will never see their submission or feedback for tests used in Online Exams. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ast-global-color-5-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ast-global-color-5-background-color has-background\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"metadata\">Name and Tag Questions with metadata<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When creating or editing a question, instructors can enable <strong>Question Metadata<\/strong>, which allows them to attach custom tags to questions. Once created, these metadata tags can be reused across multiple questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When creating or editing tests it is possible to name and or add a tag to questions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong>: Once the question has been created toggle the Question metadata tag under the question. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2: <\/strong>Type your desired<strong> Question Title <\/strong>in the text box (a).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong> Type your desired tag into the <strong>Question tags<\/strong> text box (b). They can be used to filter questions when reusing them, or when adding questions to pools, forms, or a new test canvas.
