{"id":107,"date":"2018-09-25T12:41:20","date_gmt":"2018-09-25T12:41:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/?page_id=107"},"modified":"2024-03-25T14:40:18","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T14:40:18","slug":"academic-support-and-study-skills","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/your-role\/academic-support-and-study-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic support and study skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Your role involves:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>helping students to reflect on their academic progress to date using tools such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.screencast.com\/t\/LdWWoQ5Qaa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">submodular mark screens on RISIS<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/essentials\/Study\/Student-Progress-Dashboard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Progress Dashboard<\/a><\/li>\n<li>working with students to identify their strengths and weaknesses in relation to academic study skills<\/li>\n<li>encouraging students to develop their study skills through <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/referring-to-support-services\/academic-professional-support\/\">Academic Support Services<\/a> (e.g. Study Advice, Liaison Librarians, Maths Support, English Language Support etc)<\/li>\n<li>helping students make decisions in relation to their course and to connect with other academics in their field of study<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What to do if a student tells you they want to suspend\/withdraw<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>We suggest you follow up with an email, saying something like:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we met on (date) you mentioned that\u00a0 you were thinking of asking to suspend or maybe of withdrawing. Just so you have the information you need on this\/these please see the following Essentials page\/s, with guidance and a link to the relevant form to complete:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/essentials\/the-important-stuff\/rules-and-regulations\/suspensions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">Suspensions<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/essentials\/the-important-stuff\/rules-and-regulations\/withdrawing-from-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\">Withdrawing from study&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can adapt the message to make it relevant to what the student has said, re suspension\/withdrawal. Please copy in the SSC and your DAT.<\/p>\n<p>Be aware that many students change their mind about suspending so\u00a0<b>you should not assume that a student has suspended<\/b>\u00a0until their status changes on the RISIS Tutor card.
