You can find your list of academic tutees on RISIS &#8211; look under Student Administration and click on \u201cMy Students\u201d.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowright\" id=\"id69e1473083aa6\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"How many tutees should I be responsible for?\"    >How many tutees should I be responsible for?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e1473083aa6\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">There is no fixed number and this will vary depending on the size of your School\/Department. If you have concerns speak to your <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/support-for-academic-tutors\/school-directors-of-academic-tutoring\/list-of-directors-of-academic-tutoring\/\">SDAT<\/a> or Head of School.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowright\" id=\"id69e1473083aeb\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"How often should I meet my tutees?\"    >How often should I meet my tutees?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e1473083aeb\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">You should invite students to meet at least once in semester 1 (plus the Welcome Week meeting in Part 1), and twice in semester 2. The first semester 2 meeting should be after results have come out from the first assessment period.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowright\" id=\"id69e1473083b4f\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Where should we meet?\"    >Where should we meet?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e1473083b4f\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">It is most common to meet in your office, although if you share an office or are holding a group tutorial you may need to book a meeting room. You can also use the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/meetings\/topics-for-meetings\/\">outline meeting agendas<\/a> to give you ideas.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowright\" id=\"id69e1473083bc1\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Will the tutee be aware of what my role is?\"    >Will the tutee be aware of what my role is?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e1473083bc1\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/essentials\/Study\/Academic-Tutors\">Essentials webpages<\/a>\u00a0give students information about the role of their Academic Tutor, what to expect from their tutor, and how to get the most out of tutor meetings.<\/p>\n<p>In the first meeting you have with your tutees in Welcome Week it\u2019s a good idea talk about your role, what you expect of your tutees and vice versa, and how you plan to run meetings in the future.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowright\" id=\"id69e1473083c0e\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Can I meet my tutees as a group?&lt;strong&gt; &lt;\/strong&gt;\"    >Can I meet my tutees as a group?<strong> <\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e1473083c0e\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">Academic Tutors may arrange to meet with tutees individually or in groups but students should have the opportunity to have an individual meeting if they would prefer, and be encouraged to contact their academic tutor for individual discussions at other times if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Many topics lend themselves well to group meetings. Please see the page on <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/meetings\/group-tutorials\/\">group meetings<\/a> for suggestions.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowright\" id=\"id69e1473083c6d\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Do I need to keep a record of what we discuss in meetings?\"    >Do I need to keep a record of what we discuss in meetings?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e1473083c6d\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">The minimum information you should record is whether or not you met with the student. This can be recorded on RISIS. It is good practice to keep a record of what was discussed, but this does not need to be detailed. These notes should be agreed with the student, and will be visible to you, the student, your SDAT\/DDAT, the School\/Department DTL, the Head of School and Head of Department, and the SIS team. There is now a tool on RISIS that allows you to record tutorial attendance in bulk, rather than for each student individually. Click\u00a0<a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2019\/08\/Recording-bulk-tutorial-attendance-user-guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>\u00a0for instructions on how to use it.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowright\" id=\"id69e1473083ca5\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"What if my student does not respond to emails or turn up to meetings?\"    >What if my student does not respond to emails or turn up to meetings?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e1473083ca5\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">It is a good idea to send a follow-up email if a student does not respond the first time, or misses a meeting, but you are not expected to continually chase students. If you have concerns about a particular student, based on their non-attendance and other information you might hold (e.g. from the RISIS Tutor card) then you should speak to your <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/support-for-academic-tutors\/school-directors-of-academic-tutoring\/list-of-directors-of-academic-tutoring\/\">SDAT<\/a> or to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/referring-to-support-services\/personal-support\/student-welfare-team\/\">Student Welfare Team<\/a>, or complete a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/uor-forms\/student\/notification-of-concern-Form\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Notification of Concern form<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowright\" id=\"id69e1473083cdb\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"What do I do if I am unable to answer some of the questions my tutees ask?\"    >What do I do if I am unable to answer some of the questions my tutees ask?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e1473083cdb\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">As an Academic Tutor you are not expected to know everything!<\/p>\n<p>There are many other support services available (see the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/referral-flowchart\/\">flowchart here<\/a>) to answer students\u2019 questions about e.g. housing, finance, visas, and to support them with issues around welfare, mental health and disabilities. If a student has questions about their programme, timetable, module choices etc then you can direct them to the Support Centres, the Programme\/Student Support Administrators (in HBS), or the Admin Office (in ISLI).<\/p>\n<p>If a student\u2019s questions are about their subject, and it is outside your own area of expertise, then you can direct them to appropriate resources or other academic colleagues.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowright\" id=\"id69e1473083d0f\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"What if my tutee asks for a different Academic Tutor?\"    >What if my tutee asks for a different Academic Tutor?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e1473083d0f\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">Students are advised that it is usually beneficial for them to continue with the same Academic Tutor throughout their time at the University, but if there is a genuine reason for them wanting to change Tutor, you or they should discuss this with your <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/support-for-academic-tutors\/school-directors-of-academic-tutoring\/list-of-directors-of-academic-tutoring\/\">SDAT<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowright\" id=\"id69e1473083d44\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"What happens if I feel the student has an issue that is too serious for me to deal with?\"    >What happens if I feel the student has an issue that is too serious for me to deal with?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e1473083d44\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">Obviously it depends what the issue is, but you can direct them to any of the other available <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/referring-to-support-services\/\">support services<\/a>, and\/or talk to your <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/support-for-academic-tutors\/school-directors-of-academic-tutoring\/list-of-directors-of-academic-tutoring\/\">SDAT<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/referring-to-support-services\/personal-support\/student-welfare-team\/\">Student Welfare Team<\/a> about the best course of action. You can also fill in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/uor-forms\/student\/notification-of-concern-Form\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Notification of Concern form<\/a> which will go to the SWT.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowright\" id=\"id69e1473083d8b\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"What if my tutee is not experiencing any problems?\"    >What if my tutee is not experiencing any problems?<\/span>The relationship between an Academic Tutor and a tutee should be proactive, and students don\u2019t need to be experiencing any problems in order to attend and benefit from Academic Tutor meetings. A large part of the Academic Tutor role is to assist students with their academic and professional development, so for example, you can discuss progress on their course, module options, feedback from assessments, CVs, work experience and placements. You can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/meetings\/topics-for-meetings\/\">outline meeting agendas<\/a>, or ideas on the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/meetings\/\">Meetings<\/a> pages to help structure your meetings.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowright\" id=\"id69e1473083df2\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Can I receive any training on how to be a good Academic Tutor if I feel I need it?\"    >Can I receive any training on how to be a good Academic Tutor if I feel I need it?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e1473083df2\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/events\/\">CQSD T&amp;L Programme<\/a> includes sessions that will be of use to Academic Tutors, and other briefings\/training may be organised by SDATs in Schools\/Departments.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowright\" id=\"id69e1473083e27\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Can I speak to someone if I find my role difficult or upsetting?\"    >Can I speak to someone if I find my role difficult or upsetting?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e1473083e27\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">Your <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/support-for-academic-tutors\/school-directors-of-academic-tutoring\/list-of-directors-of-academic-tutoring\/\">SDAT\/DDAT<\/a> is there to support you if you need to talk to someone. You can also speak to a member of the Student Welfare Team for advice.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowright\" id=\"id69e1473083e5c\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"What do I do if I feel that my tutee is struggling with their work?\"    >What do I do if I feel that my tutee is struggling with their work?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e1473083e5c\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">Depending on what the issue is you might suggest that they talk to the Programme Director, or a specific Module Convenor, about any problems they are having with the content. If the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/referring-to-support-services\/academic-professional-support\/peer-assisted-learning\/\">Peer Assisted Learning<\/a> scheme is running in their modules that could also provide support for them. You may also want to direct them to <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/referring-to-support-services\/academic-professional-support\/study-advice\/\">Study Advice<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/referring-to-support-services\/academic-professional-support\/maths-support\/\">Maths Support<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/referring-to-support-services\/academic-professional-support\/life-tools\/\">Life Tools<\/a> programme or the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/referring-to-support-services\/academic-professional-support\/academic-liaison-librarians\/\">Academic Liaison Librarians<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you or your tutee feel that the fact they are struggling might be due to a disability or mental health issue then you could recommend that they visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/referring-to-support-services\/personal-support\/disability-advisory-service\/\">Disabilty Advisory Service<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/referring-to-support-services\/personal-support\/student-welfare-team\/\">Student Welfare Team<\/a> to talk through their problems. Students should be referred to C&amp;W when issues are previously diagnosed or appear to have a long term impact, or if they are complex and require looking into personal history to assess and develop different behaviours.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/academictutors\/referring-to-support-services\/personal-support\/student-welfare-team\/\">Student Welfare Team<\/a> provide specialist advice, guidance and signposting for students who are experiencing difficulties outside their studies.
