SUMMARY:Dr Beverley Costa- Supporting Children and Young People with English as an Additional Language. Online Event.
DESCRIPTION:Patients\, whose first language is not English\, are often doubly disadvantaged by their reliance on others to provide their voice and to mediate their communication. How can Low intensity Mental Health practitioners ensure that they are able to work effectively with multilingual children\, young people and their families – with and without interpreters in their practice? \nThe experiential day’s training covers the following: \n\nWorking effectively with an interpreter.\nIssues of power and safety in a ‘triad’ – boundaries\, communication\, power dynamics and relationships with both patient & interpreter.\nMaintaining clinical authority when you don’t understand the language(s) spoken in the room.\n\nWe will also consider how multilingual identities impact on emotional expression\, memory recall and a sense of belonging. Why is it\, for example\, that children choose their friends based on whether or not they sound like them? We will explore the tensions between Safeguarding\, discrimination and cultural sensitivity. \nDrawing on research findings we will consider the issues of assumptions\, loss\, anxiety\, agency\, insider and outsider status\, all from the multilingual/ multi-ethnic perspective. Throughout the workshop amalgamated case examples\, as well as findings from research\, will provide illustrations and promote discussion. \nPresented by Dr.Beverley Costa\, a psychotherapist\, who set up Mothertongue multi-ethnic counselling service www.mothertongue.org.uk in 2000. She then founded The Pásalo Project in 2017 www.pasaloproject.org  to disseminate the learning from nearly two decades of Mothertongue’s service. \n  \nBook Here\n  \nThis workshop will run from 10:00 am until 4.30 pm\, with a 45- minute break for lunch\, at a cost of £75. \nGroup bookings of 4 workshops or more will receive a 10% discount (£67.50 per session)\, and 10 workshops or more will receive a 15% discount (£63.75 per session)*. \nUniversity of Reading Students (current and graduate) will receive a 20% discount upon verification of a valid student number.
