{"id":74,"date":"2020-06-23T14:57:51","date_gmt":"2020-06-23T13:57:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/charlie-waller-institute\/?page_id=74"},"modified":"2025-08-05T11:50:40","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T10:50:40","slug":"postgraduate-diploma-in-evidence-based-psychological-treatment-for-children-and-young-people-cbt-route","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/charlie-waller-institute\/training\/iapt-training\/children-young-people\/postgraduate-diploma-in-evidence-based-psychological-treatment-for-children-and-young-people-cbt-route\/","title":{"rendered":"PGDip in Children and Young People\u2019s CBT"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>This British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) accredited course provides the training needed to qualify as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT) with children and young people.<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>CBT practitioners assess and deliver high-intensity interventions for moderate mental health problems such as depression, OCD, PTSD and anxiety disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Employment is generally through a \u2018Recruit to Train\u2019 (RTT) contract with an NHS or voluntary sector partner organisation for the duration of training, plus potentially further employment post-qualification. Interested candidates are encouraged to explore NHS jobs for \u2018trainee cognitive-behavioural therapist\u2019 positions.<\/p>\n<p>Through this postgraduate training year, you will develop your skills with a mixture of taught content, role-play and skills practice teaching, as well as clinical work undertaken in a Children and Young People\u2019s Mental Health (CYP MH) setting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What Can I Expect from the Course?<\/h2>\n<p>The course runs over one calendar year, and consists of roughly 45 taught University days, 24 University supervision days, and 20 study days, alongside work (or self-arranged placement if self-funding) in a CYP MH service.<\/p>\n<p>The course consists of 3 compulsory modules:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Foundation Skills for Working with Children and Young People with Mental Health Problems<\/li>\n<li>Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Anxiety Disorders in Children and Young People<\/li>\n<li>Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Depression in Children and Young People<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You will be taught through a variety of teaching methods including lectures, experiential skills, training workshops, self-directed learning, and group and individual clinical supervision. You will actively apply and develop the skills you learn in your trainee role within a mental health service.<\/p>\n<p>Across the course, trainees are expected to undertake a minimum of 200 clinical contact hours with patients and receive 70 hours of supervision.<\/p>\n<h2>How is the Course Assessed?<\/h2>\n<p>The course is assessed through a combination of written and clinical assessments. Written assignments include essays and case reports. Clinical assignments include a minimum of 6 full-length clinical recordings with clients and a case presentation.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the course, students are also expected to demonstrate their learning and development through a portfolio.<\/p>\n<h2>Entry Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>For information on entry requirements for Recruit to Train positions, please consult the job specification advertised on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jobs.nhs.uk\/candidate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS jobs.<\/a> If you do not have a core profession you will need to complete a Knowledge Skills and Attitudes (KSA) portfolio \u2013 please see below and\/or the NHS Jobs specification.<\/p>\n<p>Entry requirements for self-funded or sponsored students are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Core professional training in mental health, as defined by BABCP. Your KSA should be completed BEFORE interview<\/li>\n<li>Access to appropriate cases during training<\/li>\n<li>Access to appropriate clinical supervision<\/li>\n<li>Membership of BABCP once enrolled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Careers<\/h2>\n<p>Successful completion of the programme will mean that you are eligible to apply for accreditation with BABCP as a CBT therapist A qualified CBT therapist salary is typically equivalent to NHS band 6 or 7 pay, depending on the service and responsibilities of the role. The number of places available per cohort is dependent on NHS service funding.<\/p>\n<p>Potential candidates may apply through job advertisements on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jobs.nhs.uk\/candidate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS jobs.<\/a> The University of Reading will review the application and a member of our team will be present on the interview panel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update July 2024-<\/strong> We are now registering interest for non-NHS funded places on this course.
