{"id":10844,"date":"2023-06-21T11:43:56","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T11:43:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/?p=10844"},"modified":"2023-06-21T11:49:55","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T11:49:55","slug":"a-stark-climate-change-message","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/2023\/06\/21\/a-stark-climate-change-message\/","title":{"rendered":"A Stark Climate Change Message"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px\">The White Cliffs of Dover have been illuminated blue and red to highlight a stark climate change message.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\" theme-editor\">\n<p>The Tate Modern chimney and landmarks in Reading, the USA and Canada will also display the climate stripes on <strong>Wednesday 21 June<\/strong>, to mark <a href=\"https:\/\/showyourstripes.info\/\">Show Your Stripes<\/a>\u00a0Day. People all over the world are being encouraged to download and share the graphics and start conversations about the impact of climate change where they live.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Starting a conversation about Climate Change on #ShowYourStripesDay\" width=\"770\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jPSBBr91EEQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Created in 2018 by Professor Ed Hawkins, climate scientist at the University of Reading and National Centre for Atmospheric Science, the vertical-coloured bars have no words and no numbers and show the progressive heating of our planet in a single, striking image. The blue and red stripes show clearly and vividly how global average temperatures have risen over nearly two centuries.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Hawkins said: \u201cIn 2022 millions of people saw the stripes at Reading Festival, London Fashion Week and on football kits and started conversations about climate change. Every bit of future warming will make those consequences worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Local action<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Schoolchildren in Reading and Wokingham will come together to think about climate actions they would like to see in their schools at a Youth Climate Summit on 21 June.<\/p>\n<p>They will gather at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, home of Reading FC, to display the University of Reading\u2019s climate stripes.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Hawkins said: \u201cThe climate stripes featured on the most recent Reading FC kit, and at an event last season we had lots of youngsters design their own amazing strips that featured interesting climate change messages. Schoolchildren know more about climate change than ever before but it\u2019s so important that they keep starting conversations about our warming planet. We need to listen to our children\u2019s concerns about the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A number of Reading landmarks will be illuminated blue and red to showcase the climate stripes.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Show Your Stripes<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Children up and down the UK are also being encouraged to show their stripes by downloading graphics at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/showyourstripes.info\/?bbeml=tp-8w5mn3z9eE2-rOc4FL2hwg.jHx9pDNbhTki-R9NABte0NQ.rq-P5VwPWy0eVVGPjb8OqKA.lcOFtqVZ4-EG0y6s5pxIpCQ\">ShowYourStripes.info<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Show Your Stripes Day has been chosen as Let\u2019s Go Zero\u2019s national school\u2019s day of action.
