Whilst there, he was also able to do some sightseeing and experience some of the wonders of China for himself.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Archaeological wonders<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12414 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/02\/shutterstock_image-2024-02-07T174123.084-219x300.jpg\" alt=\"Robert in front of the forbidden city\" width=\"219\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/02\/shutterstock_image-2024-02-07T174123.084-219x300.jpg 219w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/02\/shutterstock_image-2024-02-07T174123.084-270x370.jpg 270w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/02\/shutterstock_image-2024-02-07T174123.084.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/>During Professor Van de Noort\u2019s free time in China he was keen to fulfil his lifelong desire of seeing \u00a0the Forbidden City and the Terracotta Army.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Van de Noort said: \u201cI vividly recall seeing Bertolucci\u2019s The Last Emperor film, in my mid-20s and it left a very lasting impression on me. Since then, I\u2019ve always wanted to visit the Forbidden City.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a really wonderful experience. It was a warm and sunny day, and when you first go into the Forbidden City there are lots of people. But the place is so enormous that it didn\u2019t feel overcrowded.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt was quite easy for me to find a quiet spot to really admire the architecture, the symbolism, and the buildings. It is really very impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12415 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/02\/shutterstock_image-2024-02-07T174107.200-219x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"219\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/02\/shutterstock_image-2024-02-07T174107.200-219x300.jpg 219w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/02\/shutterstock_image-2024-02-07T174107.200-270x370.jpg 270w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/02\/shutterstock_image-2024-02-07T174107.200.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/> As an archaeologist, Professor Van de Noort was also keen to visit the Terracotta Army in Xi\u2019an. He said: \u201cI\u2019ve known about the Terracotta Army for most of my working life and so I decided to travel by bullet train to Xi\u2019an, which was quick and easy. Going there was just magnificent. You can\u2019t not be impressed by the scale of the army itself, nor by the finessing in the statues which was quite beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also got to visit the Tomb of the First Emperor of China, which is set back from the Terracotta Army. The army was there to symbolically defend the tomb from invaders. The tomb is still being excavated \u2013 it is enormous and what they\u2019ve found, and are still discovering, creates a whole new perspective on a society and a civilisation more than 2000 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A welcoming reception<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Whilst travelling around China \u2013 for meetings with the <a href=\"https:\/\/english.bit.edu.cn\/\">Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT)<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/about\/nuist\">NUIST Reading Academy<\/a>, at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST), and for the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/2023\/09\/21\/beijing-alumni-reception\/\">Beijing Alumni Reception<\/a> \u2013 Professor Van de Noort was struck by how welcoming everyone was.\u00a0He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMy favourite aspect of the trip was how friendly everyone was \u2013 from the alumni I met, to my colleagues at NUIST and BIT. They were incredibly welcoming and very proud of their relationship with the University of Reading. Everyone was so warm about their time at Reading. Nearly all of them commented about the beautiful campus and the different way of learning at Reading, where they were co-producers of their learning. It certainly sounded like Reading has left a lasting impression on them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was wonderful to hear how many of our alumni have great jobs in China and are doing very well in their careers. I was heartened to hear from many of the graduates who attended that they would love to return to Reading one day to pursue further studies. As the video we played at the event stated: once Reading, always Reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beijing Alumni Reunion Welcome Video\" width=\"770\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WM9OHxu_SoQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Sharing of food<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Professor Van de Noort found that sharing of food and drink in China was very important for meetings and building mutual trust. During his eight-day trip, he was fortunate to try an array of Chinese cuisine.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cI had many formal dinners where I was served lots of dishes, so I had the opportunity to try many new and different things \u2013 including a sea slug. I loved experiencing all the different foods there. But one of my favourites was actually a simple but famous dish called the Biang Biang noodle.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis was a large noodle, about half a metre long and two inches thick. You tend to have one or two noodles and it comes in a very spicy, cumin-flavoured lamb sauce which was absolutely delicious. I\u2019m very pleased I got to try it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Professor Van de Noort also talks to CONNECTED about how his visit was able to <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/2024\/02\/07\/strengthening-partnerships\/\">help strengthen and grow the University of Reading\u2019s educational collaborations in China<\/a>.
