The stark reality of global warming was impossible to ignore at this year\u2019s festival when the University of Reading\u2019s climate stripes were displayed on the big screen of the main stage by Enter Shikari<\/em> frontman, Rou Reynolds.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the band\u2019s set this Sunday, when weekend temperatures soared to a whopping 32 degrees, Rou Reynolds displayed the powerful graphic created by world-leading climate scientist, Professor\u00a0Ed Hawkins.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

In a passionate speech, Reynolds described the image as\u00a0\u201cone of the most defining, one of the most crucial, images of our time.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He praised the University of Reading\u2019s climate research and encouraged fans to \u201cspread truth like this as far and as wide as we can.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

Professor Hawkins tweeted<\/a> his thanks to the band for \u201ccommunicating so effectively about climate change during your festival performances this summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u00a0He went on to say that it is \u201camazing to see #showyourstripes used like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"The striking image shown by Enter Shikari<\/em> is part of a series of climate graphics created by Professor Hawkins. The graphics plot average temperatures for each year since 1850 and\u00a0visually demonstrate how temperatures have risen\u00a0in every corner of the globe. Blue stripes represent cooler temperatures and red stripes represent hotter years.\u00a0The thick band of\u00a0deep\u00a0red stripes\u00a0that appear on\u00a0the\u00a0right hand\u00a0side\u00a0of the graphics act\u00a0as a stark warning of how human action has contributed to\u00a0a heating up of the climate over time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

#madeatreading campaign<\/strong><\/h4>\n

In June 2019, Reading held a week long #madeatreading<\/a>\u00a0celebration of its world-class environmental research\u00a0and action, which culminated in a \u2018Show Your Stripes Day\u2019 to raise awareness of the\u00a0pervasive reality of\u00a0global warming. Shareable graphics were available to download<\/a> for use on social channels, and a striking range of climate stripes clothing was designed and is still available to buy online<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Professor Hawkins said: \u201cScientists measure global temperatures and draw graphs of heat building up over time, yet no individual person\u00a0can ever\u00a0experience average global warming.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cBy showing just how temperatures have risen in every single country and every single state on the planet, it shows people that this is a worldwide phenomenon from which there is nowhere to hide. We really are all in this together.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cI would urge anyone who cares about the future of our planet to check out the stripes for their region and share it with others. It\u2019s a powerful way to show what we humans have already done to the climate in our respective home countries. If\u00a0we want to\u00a0avoid\u00a0heating up our homes even further, we must act quickly.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The University is a world leader in environmental research<\/a> and is involved in many sustainability projects in the local community. Through its impressive carbon management plan, Reading is following an ambitious pathway of carbon reduction, having set a challenging emissions reduction target of 45% by July 2020, against a 2008\/09 baseline.\u00a0 Earlier this year, it hit the 40% reduction target in its carbon footprint.\u00a0<\/p>\n
