









{"id":4849,"date":"2020-02-27T11:54:01","date_gmt":"2020-02-27T11:54:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/?p=4849"},"modified":"2020-03-17T11:25:06","modified_gmt":"2020-03-17T11:25:06","slug":"gals-who-graduate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/2020\/02\/27\/gals-who-graduate\/","title":{"rendered":"Gals Who Graduate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\">Reading alumna and recent graduate, Bronte King, founded Gals Who Graduate \u2013 a social media-grown community aimed at supporting recent female graduates in their anxieties surrounding life during, and after university. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With no clear career plan after college and having worried whether further education would be a good fit, social media star and model, Bronte King, is delighted to concede that opting to study at the University of Reading proved a serendipitous selection.<\/p>\n<p>From not being able to picture a preferred profession to graduating with a clear focus for the future, three years spent as an undergraduate in Berkshire equipped Bronte \u2013 now an established Instagram influencer renowned for creating compelling lifestyle, fashion and travel content for major brands.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4855 alignright\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body1-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body1-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body1-768x479.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body1-370x231.jpg 370w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body1-270x168.jpg 270w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body1-570x355.jpg 570w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body1-740x461.jpg 740w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body1.jpg 770w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In addition to fine-tuning the production skills which continue to help her posts stand out from the digital crowd, the day-to-day experiences of studying for a degree in film and television at the University of Reading\u2019s Minghella Studios, served as inspiration for the 22-year-old alumnus\u2019 benevolent business \u2013 Gals Who Graduate.<\/p>\n<p>The rapidly expanding, social media-grown community \u2013 which aims to reassure female students about the anxieties associated with life after university through a mutual support network and tailored events \u2013\u00a0was founded by Bronte during her final year at Reading and now boasts more than 7,000 members.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGals who Graduate came about through talking,\u201d Bronte, who graduated last June, told CONNECTED. \u201cI was living with four of my best friends and, after three years of getting to know each other and becoming so close, it was weird to think about moving out and moving on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of us had a job lined up, even though that seems to be the expectation, and \u2013 with no money coming in \u2013 we were having to move back home. It all just seemed so daunting and I would go to the uni bar and talk to people and find many were in the same boat. Everyone seemed to be under so much pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An Instagram post reaching out to others quickly confirmed to Bronte that Reading students were not alone in having concerns about their time on campus coming to an end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had an amazing response; I have never had such a big reaction to something I\u2019ve spoken about on Insta,\u201d she added. \u201cThat\u2019s when I knew I had to do something to get people talking more openly about their anxieties. I created a closed Facebook group that night and by the next morning there were about 400 members.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Expanding a social community\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A little more than six months on, and Bronte is busy with expansion plans for her caring community and creating a calendar of events to encourage connections across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Keen to encourage face-to-face interaction as well as a digital dialogue, she has already hosted three successful evenings, with the most recent \u2013 a collaboration with London bar, Baille Ballerson, selling out within 50 seconds of tickets going on sale.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4856 alignleft\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body-768x479.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body-370x231.jpg 370w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body-270x168.jpg 270w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body-570x355.jpg 570w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body-740x461.jpg 740w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/02\/Bronte-body.jpg 770w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe events have been \u2018pinch me\u2019 moments,\u201d she said. \u201cThe fact that amazing brands like Charlotte Tilbury and Superdrug supported the first was just crazy. I used to buy their products as a student and now I am hosting events with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bronte insists, however, that the greatest reward for overseeing the growth of Gals Who Graduate is seeing and hearing the benefits it brings to its members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a lot of hard work that goes on behind the scenes, but it is all worth it,\u201d added Bronte, whose online popularity has led to enduring partnerships with fashion brands such as Under Armour and JD Sports. \u201cWe had one girl who literally didn\u2019t go to any social events with friends because of her anxiety, but agreed to be brave and come to our supper club.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said it was the best night she\u2019s had for a long time and she now has a group of girls she can talk to about graduation, getting a job and anything else on her mind!<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThere are also five girls who met in the Facebook group that now live together \u2013\u00a0it\u2019s wonderful hearing such fantastic feedback and it is why, 100 per cent, Gals Who Graduate is my long-term plan.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI really want to make sure it is known in every single university and I\u2019d love to visit universities, graduations and careers\u2019 fairs to give talks and let people know this is a community for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Using social media for good <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>While being the figurehead of Gals Who Graduate helped to alleviate Bronte\u2019s own pre-graduation panic, the anxieties it addresses are not alien to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really didn\u2019t know what I wanted to do when I was younger \u2013\u00a0I was so lost and only picked my A-Levels because they were subjects I enjoyed,\u201d she said. \u201cI wasn\u2019t really sure I even wanted to go to university but thought I should give it a go as it was what everyone else seemed to be doing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hated it to begin with and wanted to go home. I remember calling my parents on my birthday after a week and crying down the phone to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt so anxious and lonely and all I could see on friends\u2019 Insta and Snapchat stories were people having the best time ever during Freshers\u2019 Week.
