









{"id":6821,"date":"2020-11-13T15:02:56","date_gmt":"2020-11-13T15:02:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/?p=6821"},"modified":"2020-11-13T15:03:00","modified_gmt":"2020-11-13T15:03:00","slug":"planet-partners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/2020\/11\/13\/planet-partners\/","title":{"rendered":"Planet Partners"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\">With global partnerships more important than ever as the world seeks to \u2018build back greener\u2019 after the pandemic, CONNECTED highlights some of the University of Reading\u2019s successful climate partnerships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The University of Reading is committed to building on its strong international partnerships with environmental and research organisations, as it continues to do something about major issues such as climate change, and helping the world respond to natural hazards such as floods, storms and heatwaves.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Reading\u2019s international collaborations include firm and established links with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The ECMWF is currently considering a UK plan to strengthen those links by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/news-and-events\/releases\/PR849339.aspx\">establishing a new scientific centre<\/a> on the University of Reading\u2019s Whiteknights campus.<\/p>\n<p>There is superb research taking place between the University, ECMWF and the EU-funded Copernicus programme. Such research shows how Reading scientists are making outstanding contributions to projects that are helping many European countries, businesses and people.<\/p>\n<p>Some examples of research projects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Predicting the <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/pao5kh-L3\">impacts of tropical cyclones<\/a> (Dr Rebecca Emerton)<\/li>\n<li>Making better seasonal forecasts by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecmwf.int\/en\/newsletter\/154\/news\/stratosphere-task-force-one-year\">understanding the stratosphere<\/a> (Professor Robin Hogan and Dr Inna Polichtchouk)<\/li>\n<li>Showing how <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/pao5kh-KJ\">Europe\u2019s lakes are heating up<\/a> fastest in the world (Dr Laura Carrea)<\/li>\n<li>Linking <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/pao5kh-yY\">weather and energy forecasts<\/a> to make the grid greener (Dr David Brayshaw).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The University of Reading has been highlighting projects like these on social media, under the theme of #PlanetPartners.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Robert Van de Noort, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Reading, said: \u201cWith more uncertainty about the future than ever before, it is understandable that people are worried.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI am proud that the University is continuing to do something about it, by working together with others from around the world, and those international organisations such as ECMWF with whom we have strong and growing links.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cNow is the time to build on these partnerships. I am confident that the University will continue to make a big difference to the big environmental challenges the world faces in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Reading 2050<\/h4>\n<p>As part of the University of Reading\u2019s commitment to address major issues such as climate change, CONNECTED is pleased to share how research from Reading academics is playing a key part in developing the future vision of Reading town.<\/p>\n<p>The University is publishing <a href=\"https:\/\/livingreading.co.uk\/public\/downloads\/AhO8o\/Reading%202050%20Lecture%20Series.pdf\">\u2018Reading 2050: a smart and sustainable city?\u2019<\/a>, a collection of articles edited by Professors Tim Dixon and Lorraine Farrelly from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/built-environment\/\">School of the Built Environment<\/a>.
