The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/library\/\">University of Reading Library<\/a> has got you covered with their new guide to Open Access resources, available for alumni to use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re graduating this summer, or have already graduated, the University of Reading Library is here to keep supporting you in achieving your goals.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What\u2019s in the guide?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.reading.ac.uk\/freeresearchresources\">this guide<\/a>, our academic liaison librarians share their knowledge of how to find academic articles, books, and other resources useful for research. All of the resources highlighted are available to read online or download.<\/p>\n<p>They also explain how you can search online library catalogues, suggest different UK libraries you could visit or join, and describe how your public library can provide access to research resources.<\/p>\n<p>The guide\u2019s welcome page shows you how to use the tabs to explore by type of resources, and one tab contains further information specifically for alumni. There is also a link to the Library subject guides, many of which have free resources.<\/p>\n<p>The guide also includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Free online access to theses, primary sources, images, film, maps and data<\/li>\n<li>Referencing guides and tools<\/li>\n<li>Support for alumni.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Enabling access to knowledge<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8122 alignright\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2021\/07\/shutterstock_image-Chloe-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2021\/07\/shutterstock_image-Chloe-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2021\/07\/shutterstock_image-Chloe-768x479.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2021\/07\/shutterstock_image-Chloe-370x231.jpg 370w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2021\/07\/shutterstock_image-Chloe-270x168.jpg 270w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2021\/07\/shutterstock_image-Chloe-570x355.jpg 570w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2021\/07\/shutterstock_image-Chloe-740x461.jpg 740w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2021\/07\/shutterstock_image-Chloe.jpg 770w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>CONNECTED talks to Chloe Bolsover, a Senior Library Assistant at the University of Reading, to find out more about what inspired the team to create this guide, and how it can be useful for alumni.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe explained: \u201cThe University is committed to the principles of Open Access \u2013 a worldwide movement \u2013 which aims to increase the number of academic books and articles which are free to access and download without the need to pay a subscription.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cSharing resources and knowledge is part of the University\u2019s strategy to engage with our wider community, in order to have a positive impact. The Library team were inspired to create the guide to bring together accessible resources from the Library, as well as external, wider sources.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Open Access is important all of the time, but never more so than during the COVID-19 pandemic when physical access to libraries can be restricted. Currently, access to the University Library is limited to members only, with the registration of external users suspended until further notice.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe said: \u201cUnder normal circumstances \u2013 outside of our COVID-19 safe operation \u2013 alumni are welcome to use the Library for reference and private study [except during the examinations period], without prior arrangement. However, not everyone is local to the University, or indeed to any academic library.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important that everyone is able to access a wide range of free electronic resources, and whilst Open Access resources are freely available to you, you may not know where to look or what is available.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that enabling access to knowledge for everyone benefits society \u2013 it provides an opportunity for continuing lifelong learning and developing new knowledge.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;You may wish to carry out research privately \u2013 particularly if you are considering applying for a higher degree \u2013 however, time and finances can limit the extent of these activities.
