









{"id":9950,"date":"2023-03-06T10:29:59","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T10:29:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/?p=9950"},"modified":"2023-03-06T10:34:53","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T10:34:53","slug":"international-womens-day-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/2023\/03\/06\/international-womens-day-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"International Women&#8217;s Day 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\">In honour of International Women\u2019s Day 2023 and Women\u2019s History Month, CONNECTED is delighted to share the stories of some of the inspirational women amongst our alumni who are making a difference in their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/About\">International Women\u2019s Day (IWD)<\/a> \u2013 marked annually on <strong>8 March<\/strong> \u2013 was first observed in 1911 and to this day remains a global day celebrating the historical, cultural, and political achievements of women. IWD is also an important day to show support for taking action against gender inequality and promoting women\u2019s rights. March is also Women\u2019s History Month which honours the contributions of women to history, culture, and society.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Reading is proud to have a long list of influential and inspiring women in our community, from staff to students to alumni. Alongside her career as a social worker, Hilary commits much of her spare time to volunteering.<\/p>\n<p>She champions human rights through the Reading Amnesty International Group and is volunteering in Nepal working with women and girls who have been victims of human trafficking, rape and domestic violence.\u00a0Hilary said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always believed that if you don\u2019t do anything, then nothing\u2019s going to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/2023\/03\/06\/championing-human-rights\/\">Read more teenager, and in 2021 became an Olympic rower when she represented Team GB at the Tokyo Olympic Games, as part of the women\u2019s quad.<\/p>\n<p>Mathilda said: \u201cTo compete at the Olympics makes me feel incredibly proud.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;It just shows if you really put your mind to it and work hard, you can achieve your dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a Kenya, Nancy could see that \u201cwithout the right kind of support, children in western Kenyan communities have no hope for a future.\u201d Determined to provide this support, Nancy and her husband, Jonathan, set up The Nasio Trust.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cI do what I do because I care about the community into which I was born.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;I hate seeing people suffer, especially children, when I know I can do something to help and change their destiny.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/2022\/12\/15\/changing-lives-for-good\/\">Read more about Nancy\u2019s story<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Professor Celia Kitzinger<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/connected\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2023\/03\/Celia.jpg 770w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In 2006, Celia campaigned for her lawful Canadian marriage, to wife Sue Wilkinson, to be legally recognised in England. Celia and Sue took their case to the High Court where the judge decided that they were being discriminated against, but that the discrimination was justified, in the judge\u2019s view, in order to protect the heterosexual nuclear family.<\/p>\n<p>Celia and Sue never gave up their campaign for equality and the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act came into effect in 2014.\u00a0Celia said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOur history helps us to understand our present and can guide us towards the future. She supports families who are coping with difficult diagnoses and pregnancy\/baby loss.
