Talk to us about including a gift to the University of Reading in your will.
Pledging a legacy will cost you nothing today, but will be of immense value to the University in the years to come. Whatever you want to achieve – from supporting ground-breaking research, to providing student bursaries – a gift in your will is a way of continuing to make a difference to future generations at Reading.
Legacies can be used to support many different aspects of the University’s work, and we would be happy to discuss with you how you would like your gift to be used.
The University of Reading is an exempt charity, which means that any gift left to us in your will is free of UK inheritance tax.

Gift Aid is a great way of increasing the value of your donation at no extra cost to you. Every gift you make to the University whatever its value, could be worth more just by choosing to say yes to Gift Aid.
For every pound you give to the University, we’ll get an extra 25p from the UK Government. The extra support is claimed from the tax you pay on your donations. This means that a gift of £100 is worth £125 to the university.
If you are a UK taxpayer, paying Income Tax and/or Capital Gains tax, you can sign up for Gift Aid today by ticking the box when you are donating online, or on a printed donation form.
If you pay Income Tax at the higher rate of 40%, or the additional rate of 45%, the University can claim Gift Aid on your donation. Additionally, you can claim the difference between the tax rate you pay and the basic tax rate on the value of your donation. You can claim this tax relief through your annual tax return, or by getting in touch with your tax office to amend your tax code.
As an example, if you are an additional rate tax payer paying 45% tax and you donate £1000, it could effectively cost you just £687.50, whilst the University would benefit from £1250 as the full value of your donation.
To aid filling in your self-assessment tax return we can send you an annual donation statement that you can use on your tax return, which details your donations and the gift aid.
Our alumni and friends who are based in the USA can give to the University of Reading through BSUF (British Schools and Universities Foundation), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that is recognised by the United States Internal Revenue Service. Please state your preference for the ‘University of Reading’ when asked if you wish your donation to be dedicated anywhere.
