data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>We are assessed annually for People and Planet\u2019s League which is a comprehensive and independent league table of UK universities, ranked according to their environmental and ethical performance.<\/p>\n<p>We have been improving people\u2019s lives for over a century, and remain dedicated to that same ethos of making the world a better place by putting people and the world we live in at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/world\/?twclid=11481335294989418502\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heart of our approach<\/a>. We are a world leading university on climate change, and sustainability is a core principle of the University\u2019s overarching strategy, demonstrating our commitment to making improvements in this area. We are also working to actively embed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into what we do. We have a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/policies-and-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">policies, strategies and reports<\/a> which set out our commitments and progress against these.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/peopleandplanet.org\/university-league\/2025\/u1733\/university-of-reading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summary results<\/a> are published by People and Planet and we are proud to have been rated \u2018first class' for the past several years, ranking 4th in both 2025 and 2024 and ranking 1st out of 151 universities in 2023. We have provided below some of the detail which underpins our current position across each of the 14 areas assessed. The latest on our sustainability projects and activities can be found on our <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/news\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-11794-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-11794-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-11794-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p><span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69e7cbff0ad96\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"POLICY AND STRATEGY\"    >POLICY AND STRATEGY<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"target-id69e7cbff0ad96\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<p>The University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/06\/Environment-and-Energy-Policy-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environment and Energy Policy<\/a>\u00a0sets out our sustainability and environmental commitments, and is signed off by the Vice-Chancellor, Robert Van De Noort. We also operate an externally accredited <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/policies-and-strategies\/eems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environmental and Energy Management System<\/a> (EEMS).<\/p>\n<p>Our policy is reviewed annually and environmental performance is reported on against our sustainability objectives\/strategy to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/get-involved\/staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environmental Sustainability Committee<\/a> (ESC), and to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/get-involved\/staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University Executive Board<\/a> (via ESC), through our annual <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/11\/Annual-Sustainability-Report-2024-25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environmental Sustainability Report<\/a>. The Management Review for our EEMS is also reported to both groups. The ESC and UEB both have <a href=\"https:\/\/view.officeapps.live.com\/op\/view.aspx?src=https%3A%2F%2Fstatic.reading.ac.uk%2Fcontent%2FPDFs%2Ffiles%2FGovernanceZone%2FCommittee-List-23-24-v2.docx&amp;wdOrigin=BROWSELINK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">senior management representation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We have developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/procurement\/information-for-suppliers\/responsible-procurement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responsible procurement policy<\/a>, and the staff of suppliers working on behalf of the University must ensure they are aware of this policy and comply with our EEMS. This is supported by our \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/procurement\/-\/media\/project\/functions\/procurement\/documents\/supplier-code-of-conduct-rev-1-accessible.pdf?la=en&amp;hash=0441D056D72BE80175087EA625AA60EB&amp;hash=0441D056D72BE80175087EA625AA60EB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Code of Conduct\u2019<\/a> for suppliers, produced by our procurement department.<\/p>\n<p>Sustainability is one of the core principles of the University\u2019s overall <a href=\"https:\/\/static.reading.ac.uk\/content\/PDFs\/files\/Aboutus\/university-strategy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strategy<\/a>. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/07\/Environmental-Sustainability-Strategic-Action-Plan-2025-30.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environmental Sustainability Strategic Action Plan<\/a> revolves around 3 areas; Education and Engagement, Research and Influence, and A Green University. To support delivery against this, we have developed strategies\/plans for the following key environmental impact areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><a This details the 2008-2009 baseline (Appendices 16.1 and 16.2) and milestone carbon reduction targets between now and 2030 (Section 3.2), as well as setting out the projected expenditure\/budget for achieving this target (Appendix 16.3). An <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/10\/Appendix-2-Completed-and-planned-energy-carbon-and-water-projects-and-budget-2023-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annual budget<\/a> is produced to support the projects for the upcoming year which are required to deliver against the plan (this is included as <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/10\/Appendix-2-Completed-and-planned-energy-carbon-and-water-projects-and-budget-2023-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Appendix 2<\/a> in our Environmental Sustainability Report). As referenced in section 15 Governance, the Net Zero Carbon Plan has been signed off by the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/get-involved\/staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University Executive Board<\/a> (UEB) and will be managed on a day-to-day basis by Sustainability Services, overseen, monitored and directed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/get-involved\/staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environmental Sustainability Committee<\/a> (ESC). Performance against the plan is monitored and reported on to the ESC, as well as to UEB (via ESC), and through our annual <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/12\/B32319-Sustainability-Annual-Report-2023-24-JS-v4-accessible.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environmental Sustainability report<\/a>. This report is also made publicly available via our website. ESC and UEB both have senior management representation. The <a href=\"https:\/\/view.officeapps.live.com\/op\/view.aspx?src=https%3A%2F%2Fstatic.reading.ac.uk%2Fcontent%2FPDFs%2Ffiles%2FGovernanceZone%2FCommittee-List%252024-25-November-24.docx&amp;wdOrigin=BROWSELINK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">committees list<\/a> provides details of the roles\/representatives that sit on our committees.<\/p>\n<p>We recognise the importance of our wider impact outside of scope 1 and 2 emissions and have therefore reported on our scope 3 emissions within the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/07\/University-of-Reading-Net-Zero-Carbon-Plan-2025-2040.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carbon plan<\/a>\u00a0(Appendices 16.1 and 16.2). A number of scope 3 emissions are included within the scope of our carbon reduction target, with other areas identified for further investigation and potential future action (Figure 2).<\/p>\n<p>Our scope 3 emissions are reported to the Higher Education Statistic Agency (HESA). This information is publicly available on the HESA website under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hesa.ac.uk\/data-and-analysis\/estates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Estates Management Records<\/a> (EMR). We also report scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions attributed to residential accommodation both within the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/07\/University-of-Reading-Net-Zero-Carbon-Plan-2025-2040.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carbon plan<\/a> (see Appendix 16.2) and within the Environmental Sustainability report, <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/03\/4-Additional-out-of-scope-emissions2023_24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Appendix 4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/07\/University-of-Reading-Net-Zero-Carbon-Plan-2025-2040.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carbon plan<\/a> includes baseline emissions for the following areas (Appendices 16.1 and 16.2):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Waste<\/li>\n<li>Water<\/li>\n<li>Procurement<\/li>\n<li>Staff and student business travel<\/li>\n<li>Staff and students commuting to the University on a daily basis<\/li>\n<li>Carbon emissions associated with the travel between students\u2019 homes and the University at the start and end of term<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Emissions associated with water, waste, business travel and on campus halls of residence are included within the scope of the Net Zero Carbon target as detailed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/04\/University-of-Reading-Net-Zero-Carbon-Plan-2025-2040.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> (Section 3.3). We report on the baseline and carbon emissions for off campus Halls of residence in section 16.2 of our <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/07\/University-of-Reading-Net-Zero-Carbon-Plan-2025-2040.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Net Zero Carbon Plan<\/a>\u00a0and in <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/03\/4-Additional-out-of-scope-emissions2023_24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Appendix 4<\/a> for our <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/12\/B32319-Sustainability-Annual-Report-2023-24-JS-v4-accessible.pdf\">Environmental Sustainability Report 2023-24<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sustainable Travel Policy<br \/>\n<\/strong>The University has agreed a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/procurement\/-\/media\/project\/functions\/procurement\/documents\/travel-policy-v14-211024-updated--approved.pdf?la=en&amp;hash=BFB9570FA50FAE5184EC7A9D73BD8B6C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travel Policy<\/a> in June 2023 which includes measures to reduce business flights and asks staff to consider the carbon impact of all their travel decisions. This is based on our agreed <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/sustainable-travel\/business\/sustainable-travel-policy-principles_approved\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainable Travel Principles<\/a>. There are clear ongoing opportunities for the wider student body and staff community to engage with the investment policy (Part Two, Section 5) and Reading Students Union have an ex officio right of attendance (Section 4) to the Investment Committee. This includes: sustainability strategy and advice featuring in every Student Life newsletter, strong Sustainability team presence throughout Welcome Week to engage with our student community, sustainability information included within the Welcome booklet which is sent to all new students, there is a range of sustainability information within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/essentials\/Campus-and-Local-Area\/be-sustainability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Essentials<\/a> (the student handbook) and we have a<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/get-involved\/sustainability-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> training video for all students living in halls<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our engagement programme includes an annual <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/get-involved\/past-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">green festival<\/a> and the annual staff celebration, engagement and sustainable action event '<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/get-involved\/past-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Show Your Stripes<\/a>' day based on the Climate Stripes developed by the University\u2019s Professor Ed Hawkins. Since 2022 Show Your Stripes Day has greatly raised the profile of sustainability amongst the staff community, with hundreds of staff attending events. We also host monthly sustainability awareness sessions in the library foyer <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/get-involved\/past-events\/\">'Smile with Sustainability'.<\/a> The most recent sessions involved promoting the Reading Experience and Development (RED) Sustainable Action Award and promoting Fairtrade.<\/p>\n<p>It is our aim to get everyone involved in supporting sustainability, both at the University, and in their wider lives. Examples of opportunities in 2024-25 are detailed on our <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/get-involved\/esd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Education for Sustainable Development webpage<\/a> (see section: \u2018ESD for the Real World - Students Applying Their Knowledge\u2019).<\/li>\n<li>Henley Business School awards the <a href=\"https:\/\/live.henley.ac.uk\/page\/robert-pearce-bursary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Professor Robert Pearce Prize<\/a>, which supports innovative ideas in the sustainable development field. The prize fund is made possible through philanthropy. The Steering Group set up to oversee this work reports to our main Teaching and Learning committee and is sponsored by one of our Pro-Vice-Chancellors (Education and Student Experience), Professor Elizabeth McCrum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/get-involved\/esd\/#framework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESD webpage<\/a> sets out our framework for ESD. Our goal is to ensure that ESD is the business of all subjects at the University but experienced in a way that is authentic to the discipline. This will be done by underpinning approaches to ESD with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the overarching framework, though with special recognition of the University's expertise in Climate Action (SDG13) and environmental sustainability (where appropriate). We have a number of ways of supporting our staff in this regard, as detailed on our <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/get-involved\/esd\/#delivery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESD webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our own campus provides opportunity to students to conduct real world research in sustainability, and a number of research dissertations make use of this opportunity, bringing our campus to life as a <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/get-involved\/esd\/#livinglab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">living lab<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We also support School, Faculty or Research team projects for Sustainable Development. This significant investment over the next five years will see up to 400 scholarships per year, each offering \u00a36,000 per year of study, to high performing undergraduates across all disciplines who show a commitment to becoming future sustainability leaders.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to funding, a comprehensive programme of additional learning and experience opportunities will be offered to scholars, developing a strong grounding in sustainability issues and developing core competencies and skills to enable them to be sustainability change makers in whatever industry or field they pursue.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The University has published criteria for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/research-services\/-\/media\/project\/functions\/research-and-enterprise-services\/documents\/acceptance-of-research-and-innovation-funding-public.pdf?la=en&amp;hash=0D0C3D8ED3056D912CDA0E389120CA68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acceptance of research funding<\/a>, gifts, donations and sponsorship via external partnerships in addition to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/alumni\/-\/media\/alumni\/files\/pdfs\/ethical-fundraising-policy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ethical Fundraising Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We offer scholarships to eligible sanctuary seekers (people with refugee, humanitarian protected, or asylum seeker status) through our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/ready-to-study\/study\/fees-and-funding\/sanctuary-scholarships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanctuary Scholarships scheme<\/a>. The Sanctuary Scholarship Scheme is part of the University's wider commitment to supporting the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/about\/global\/sanctuary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of Sanctuary<\/a> initiative and in June 2023 we received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/news\/2023\/University-News\/Community\/University-of-Sanctuary-award-for-Reading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Sanctuary award<\/a>. This is an important aspect of ESD as it supports access to higher education for these groups.
