The University has a dedicated team to manage sustainability across our campus. In addition, a number of groups, committees and senior management staff have sustainability responsibilities as detailed below (hover over the staff pictures for information on their experience and responsibilities). Progress against our sustainability objectives\/strategy is reported to the Environmental Sustainability Committee (ESC), and to the University Executive Board (via ESC), through our annual Environmental Sustainability Report.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Robert Van de Noort, Vice-Chancellor, vc@reading.ac.uk <\/h4>
Robert is responsible for the University's overarching strategy and has integrated sustainability as a core pillar of this. This reflects the level and seniority of the commitment the University has to environmental matters. Progress on sustainability is reported to the University Executive Board, of which Robert is a member. Dylan Parkes, Head of Strategic Engagement - Climate & Environmental Sustainability, d.parkes@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Dylan plays a key role in driving the implementation and engagement of our Environmental Sustainability Strategy (ESS). He is responsible for coordinating the workstreams within the ESS, ensuring cross-institutional\/external buy-in & collaboration, as well as efficient\/timely delivery & impact. He works to identify integrated, strategic campaigns, communications, & partnerships linked to the ESS. Previously he worked for 15 years for leading environmental NGOs, including leading marketing & fundraising teams at WWF and Friends of the Earth.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div>
\"Anna<\/div>

Anna Glue, Head of Sustainability, a.glue@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Anna leads the University's integrated Environmental & Energy Management System, accredited to ISO 14001 and 50001. Anna is a practitioner member of IEMA & achieved a BSc (hons) in Environmental Biology, with a background in environmental risk & land quality. She has worked on waste management, helping the University achieve its 50% recycling rate. With an in-depth knowledge sustainability, Anna believes that we all need to do our bit to make this world a better place for future generations, and where better to work than a university.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
\"Paul<\/div>

Paul Taylor, Sustainability Officer, p.r.taylor@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Paul is responsible for managing waste, including activities to reduce waste generated, re-use schemes (e.g. WARP-IT), recycling facilities, waste reporting & development of the waste and resource use strategy. He has worked in estates settings for 15+ years, improving environmental performance & developing sustainability strategy. \u201cI believe that strategic sustainability should focus on reducing negative impacts & encouraging positive outcomes, over the long-term; from an environmental, social, ethical & financial perspective.\u201d<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div>
\"Nipun<\/div>

Nipun Ranasinghse, Energy Analyst, n.c.ranasinghse@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Nipun has a MSc in Sustainability and Renewables from the University of Dundee and a BSc in Industrial Engineering from the Asian Institute of Technology. Previously, they worked at ACL Cables PLC, leading initiatives that significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions and production waste. They have expertise in energy data analysis, carbon footprint reduction, and environmental impact assessment, and am passionate about driving sustainability and efficiency.\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/div>

Professor Suzanne Gray, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (APVC) Research (Environment), s.l.gray@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Professor Gray in Meteorology is a researcher in weather and storms and will continue with this work alongside her APVC position. She takes on the role as a job share with Professor Tom Oliver, supporting our varied environmental researchers and offering strategic direction to this renowned area of research at Reading.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
\"Emily<\/div>

Emily Jones, Global Sustainability Leaders Scheme Manager, e.l.jones@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Emily is responsible for managing the new Global Sustainability Leaders Scholarship scheme, leading on the design and delivery of a comprehensive programme of activities and opportunities for scholars. She has a BSc and MSc in Wildlife Biology and Conservation and previously worked at the Institute of Zoology as part of a collaborative research project, focussing on wildlife health and epidemiology. She has worked in partnership with leading environmental NGOs and has over 11 years of experience in designing engaging programmes for learners, having worked as a lecturer in animal and environmental sciences.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div>
\"Lynne<\/div>

Lynne Moore, Head of Decarbonisation, lynne.moore@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Lynne is responsible for staff overseeing the delivery of the University\u2019s award-winning Net Zero Carbon Plan, including energy efficiency projects, compliance, and managing the multi-million-pound utilities budget to ensure value for money. With a strong background in business leadership for schools, including finance and strategic site development, Lynne has managed major building projects and supported numerous decarbonisation initiatives. Her experience spans solar installations, LED lighting, and insulation upgrades, helping schools and community buildings reduce carbon emissions and achieve significant cost savings.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div>
\"Jackie<\/div>

Jackie Simpson, Sustainability Officer, j.s.simpson@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Jackie plays a key role in raising awareness about sustainability and energy, delivering behaviour change events and initiatives across the University. Jackie has been awarded the IEMA Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management & has been involved in the delivery of a range of sustainability projects and initiatives at the University. Jackie manages the Sustainability team's social media platforms, web content, newsletters, blogs and organises events.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div>

Rebecca Ching, Sustainable Travel Officer, r.h.ching@reading.ac.uk <\/h4>
Responsible for managing commuting and business travel across the institution. With a background in Transport Planning, working on the continued implementation of the University\u2019s five-year Travel Plan. Focusing on promoting and encouraging sustainable travel options, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of transport while supporting the University to adopt greener travel choices wherever possible.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/div>

Tom Oliver, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (APVC) Research (Environment), t.oliver@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Tom is a Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research (Environment) and a Professor of Applied Ecology. He has advised UK government, helping to set up an environmental \u2018Systems Research Programme\u2019, and is currently seconded with UK Government Office for Science & Technology, working on a assessing national resilience to long term trends. His research develops methods to quantify and communicate environmental risk to support environmental decision-making. Tom has published more than 100 scientific papers in world-leading interdisciplinary journals, his writing has appeared in the Guardian, Independent and BBC Science Focus and he is author of the critically acclaimed book The Self Delusion: The Surprising Science of How We Are Connected and Why That Matters.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div>
\"Danielle<\/div>

Danielle Park, Business and Employability Manager (Green Careers), d.e.a.park@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Danielle is the Business and Employability Manager for Green Careers. She plays a key role in helping University of Reading students understand how to integrate sustainable practices into any career path. While many students are drawn to traditionally \"green\" careers, sustainability is increasingly vital across all sectors, and Danielle empowers students to contribute to the green transition, no matter their field of interest. She connects students with green jobs, internships, and placements in impactful industries, from renewable energy to sustainable businesses, and supports them in developing relevant skills and knowledge for a wide range of disciplines.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div>

Luke Cantellow, Energy Officer, l.j.cantellow@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Luke leads on energy & sustainability awareness\/behavioural change initiatives, engaging with staff & students to promote good environmental practices. He maintains the University\u2019s Energy Management System, identifying opportunities for energy & carbon savings, and supporting the management of approved projects. \u201cWe find targeting the behaviour of our employees an effective way to reduce the University\u2019s environmental impact. The focus on positive action and teamwork encourages students & staff to be an active part of our community.\u201d<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Yasmin Noor, Sustainability Co-ordinator, y.z.noor@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Yasmin is our Sustainability Co-ordinator. Yasmin has BSc Chemistry and MSc Environmental Management degrees, with 3.5 years of experience working in the University sector. Yasmin worked as a Sabbatical Officer at Kingston University, with sustainability falling within her remit, therefore she understands the importance of implementing and delivering policies, strategies and plans within the environmental sector, as well as communicating the importance of this to others. <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div>

Karen Robertson, Cycle Project Manager, k.robertson@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Karen leads and delivers cycle projects to encourage as many staff & students as possible to take advantage of the great opportunity on campus, like the \u2018cycle training\u2019 which is not what you think! We promise you, if you\u2019ve never taken cycle training as an adult, you will definitely learn something & have a bit of a laugh. We\u2019ll even throw in a set of cycle lights for even more encouragement. Sessions are generally held on Wednesday afternoons, but other times may be possible if you get in touch with us.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/div>

Andrew Casselden, Director of Estates, a.r.casselden@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Andrew has extensive experience: working as a chartered surveyor, building contracting and property consultancy. Sustainability Services for campus falls under Estates remit. Andrew is responsible for developing the University's Estates Strategy. Sustainability is embedded as a core element of this in line with the University's vision to lead the way on environmental matters. This ensures that sustainability is joined up with core estates activities in the context of the 4 interlocking challenges: Experience, Engagement, Environment & Efficiency. <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Dan Fernbank, Energy and Sustainability Director, d.fernbank@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Dan leads the Sustainability Services team and the University's estate-wide sustainability programmes, delivering a 46% cut in their carbon emissions and 35% cut in water consumption. Dan is Associate Member of the Energy Institute (AMEI) and sits on the steering group for the Energy Managers Association (EMA). \u201cThe University has long been a leader in teaching and research into a more sustainable future. We are proud to be delivering a more sustainable, low carbon estate through the implementation of our Sustainability programmes\u201d.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Jo Merry, Energy Officer, j.m.merry@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
Jo's background is in energy management and has completed the Energy Institute's Advanced Energy Manager (AEM) course. She supports the University's behaviour change and engagement initiatives, the Environmental and Energy Management System (EEMS), the annual sustainability report and University leagues. Jo is particularly interested in the link between people and the environment and enjoys working as part of a team which is making a positive difference to both. <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div>

Dee Morley, Utilities Finance Officer, d.l.morley@reading.ac.uk<\/h4>
As a Finance Officer, Dee\u2019s responsibilities revolve around a managing and administering multi-million pound Sustainability budgets. Within the team, she handles various aspects of financial & energy management, ensuring effective utilisation of resources and supporting the university\u2019s sustainability goals. Dee\u2019s primary tasks include invoice processing, preparing annual budgets and forecasting monthly income\/expenditures for sustainability initiatives. By analysing financial data and collaborating with relevant stakeholders she contributes to the University\u2019s pursuit of both environmental and financial Sustainability goals.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

This group is responsible for reviewing the Environment & Energy Management System (EEMS) and supporting the implementation of the system to ensure it meets the ISO14001 and ISO50001 criteria. In addition, the group is responsible for monitoring compliance with environmental related obligations and ensuring that University procedures meet these statutory and voluntary requirements, as well as the objectives set out in the Policy. The Estates Committee makes recommendations to the University Executive Board (UEB) on strategic decisions in relation to the use and maintenance of the Estate, as well as matters relating to Environmental and Energy Management, building and grounds maintenance, space management and accommodation. The University Executive Board consists of the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the Pro-Vice-Chancellors, the two Heads of Service, the Chief Financial Officer, and the University Secretary (see our committees list<\/a>). It meets fortnightly throughout most of the year and reports to Senate and to the Strategy and Finance Committee.
