{"id":2121,"date":"2017-07-11T15:48:52","date_gmt":"2017-07-11T15:48:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/?page_id=2121"},"modified":"2026-01-16T09:36:45","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T09:36:45","slug":"hazardous-waste-skips","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/recycling\/hazardous-waste-skips\/","title":{"rendered":"Hazardous Waste"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-2121\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-2121-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-2121-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2121-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_bcn_widget widget_breadcrumb_navxt panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\"><div class=\"breadcrumbs\" vocab=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/\" typeof=\"BreadcrumbList\"><span property=\"itemListElement\" typeof=\"ListItem\"><a property=\"item\" typeof=\"WebPage\" title=\"Go to Sustainability.\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\" class=\"home\"><span property=\"name\">Sustainability <\/span><\/a><meta property=\"position\" content=\"1\"><\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-2121-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-2121-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2121-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-2121-1-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Hazardous Waste<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>Waste is defined as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">hazardous<\/span> if it\u00a0contains\u00a0materials or substances that are harmful to human health or the environment.<\/p>\n<p>The University is considered to be a hazardous waste 'producer' under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/dispose-hazardous-waste\" name=\"EAHazardousWaste\"><u>Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005<\/u><\/a>.\u00a0 Therefore the correct procedures and facilities need to be in place to ensure we are managing our waste appropriately, legally and safely.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/health-safety-services\/-\/media\/project\/functions\/health-and-safety-services\/documents\/cop-48-hazardous-waste-sept-2012.pdf\">Safety Code of Practice 48: Hazardous Waste<\/a><\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0-\u00a0 This University Code of Practice provides information about what is defined as hazardous waste plus the correct management and disposal processes that need to be applied at the University of Reading.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/waste-classification-technical-guidance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Technical Guidance WM3: Waste Classification<\/span><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u00a0<\/span> \u00a0-\u00a0 This Government document provides guidance on the classification and assessment of waste.\u00a0 It lists the EWC codes that are needed to describe waste correctly before disposal.<\/p>\n<div id=\"wrapper\">\n<div id=\"lower\">\n<div id=\"container2\">\n<div id=\"content\">\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Consignment Notes<\/span> are required to be produced when hazardous waste is moved from one premises to another.\u00a0 The note must accompany the waste during transport and be completed correctly.\u00a0 \u00a0A copy of the note must be stored on site for 3 years and be available when requested.\u00a0 More information about consignment notes is available in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/health-safety-services\/-\/media\/project\/functions\/health-and-safety-services\/documents\/cop-48-hazardous-waste-sept-2012.pdf\">Safety Code of Practice 48: Hazardous Waste<\/a><\/span>, on <a href=\"https:\/\/thecompliancepeople.co.uk\/updates\/resources\/hazardous-waste-transfer-notes-england-and-wales\/\">The Compliance People website<\/a> and in this short 20 min video below:<\/p>\n<p>An Introduction to Consignment Notes:<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center;
