If you are wondering what the most sustainable way to get round your new home is, then this blog is for you!<\/p>\n<p>The carbon hierarchy, as above, shows travel methods in order of sustainability \u2013 it is a helpful tool to consider the impact of travel decisions and supports the consideration of suitable alternatives. For further information and offers, please visit our <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sustainable travel pages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/travel\/walking-to-the-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Walking<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The University has beautiful campuses\u2019 and each one is easy to navigate via foot. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/travel\/walking-to-the-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">walking webpage<\/a> shows how to get to and around Whiteknights, Greenlands and London Road. Walking is very popular with our student population \u2013 the 2022 University travel survey revealed that 70% of students get to University via foot. Not only is this one of the most sustainable modes of travel, but it is great for your physical and mental health and it\u2019s FREE.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/travel\/cycling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Cycling<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cycling to University is a fantastic option to keep you fit and another great way to travel more sustainably \u2013 our 2022 travel survey revealed that 7% of our student population travelled by bike. We support cyclists in the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Weekly <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/travel\/cycling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Bike FREE bike<\/a> maintenance sessions, 12 to 2pm Palmer Quad.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/travel\/cycling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FREE cycling training<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Low cost bike hire with our <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/travel\/cycling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unicycle scheme<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/travel\/cycle-safe-and-secure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Security Services<\/a> offer discounted D locks to keep your bike safe and secure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More details about all these schemes can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/travel\/cycling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. Please also see <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/travel\/offers\/students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> for all our cycling related travel offers!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/travel\/bus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bus<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We work in partnership with Reading Buses and our Whiteknights, Earley Gate and London Road campuses are well served by the local bus network \u2013 all information can be found on our <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/travel\/bus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bus travel<\/a> webpage.<\/p>\n<p>We have some great offer for students:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading-buses.co.uk\/services\/RBUS\/360?date=2022-01-11&amp;direction=outbound\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">360 FREE bus service<\/a> will get you safely and sustainably to Union events on Wednesdays and Fridays.<\/li>\n<li>All new students are eligible for 2 free trips on Reading Buses to let you explore your new home for free. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading-buses.co.uk\/2freetrips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sign up here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Students can buy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading-buses.co.uk\/students-pay-less\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BOOST tickets<\/a>, which can save you up to 1\/3 off your bus fare!<\/li>\n<li>If you buy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plusbus.info\/reading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PlusBus<\/a> with your rail ticket, you can add unlimited bus travel around the Reading urban area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/travel\/train\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Train travel<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our Whiteknights, London Road and Earley gate campuses are well served by local train stations which are a short walk away. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.16-25railcard.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Young Person railcard 16-25<\/a> is a great investment if you make regular journeys by rail.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Driving<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>With so many sustainable travel offers and such beautiful campuses to travel around \u2013 do you really need the cost and hassle of owning a car? If you do occasionally need access to a car &#8211; we partner with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.co-wheels.org.uk\/uor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Co Wheels<\/a> car club! We host two cars on Whiteknights \u2013 one at Sherfield Drive and the other at Dunsden Crescent.
