We had a great response rate this year from staff, with over 1,200 responses (over 30% response rate) which is the highest since 2014. You can read the full results <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/04\/2024-Travel-Survey-Results-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The way we conducted our staff survey changed this year to include much more information on working patterns, which have changed significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic and impact greatly on the way we travel. For example, the survey showed that 58% of staff work from home once or more a week, compared to just 11% in the 2020 survey. When taking account of work from home, the overall results show the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>28.1% of the working week is spent working from home<\/li>\n<li>33.5% of staff drive to campus in a typical working week; and<\/li>\n<li>The remaining 38.4% of staff use sustainable modes to travel to campus in a typical working week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The surveys gave the opportunity for our staff to have their say on potential future improvements to sustainable travel. We received many suggestions for improving access to, from and around our campuses, including:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/sustainable-travel\/walking-to-the-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Foot<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/sustainable-travel\/cycling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cycle<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More <strong>direct<\/strong> and potentially <strong>segregated<\/strong> walking and cycling routes;<\/li>\n<li>More undercover, secure <strong>cycle parking<\/strong> including for electric and adapted bikes;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Safer routes<\/strong>, including reducing speed limits, improved crossing points and better lighting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Public Transport:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More <strong>direct <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/sustainable-travel\/bus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buses<\/a><\/strong>, particularly between Whiteknights and the town centre\/station;<\/li>\n<li>Improved<strong> frequency<\/strong> including outside of term time, including during exams<\/li>\n<li>Better promotion of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/sustainable-travel\/driving-2\/#parkandride\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free Mereoak Park and Ride<\/a><\/strong> service available to all students and staff<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Responsible Car Use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Help finding <strong>car-share partners<\/strong> and better promotion of our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/sustainability\/sustainable-travel\/driving-2\/#co-wheels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">existing car clubs<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>More <strong>electric vehicle charging points<\/strong> across our campuses<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fair and flexible<\/strong> parking charges and better enforcement and\/or a digitised car parking system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The feedback received from the survey is now being analysed and will be used to prepare our next five-year Travel Plan.
