Guidance for students who are awaiting the outcome of an exceptional circumstance request for an assessment

I am waiting for the outcome of an exceptional circumstances request, what should I do?

You should submit as much as you can before the normal deadline, through Ask a Question on RISIS. Do not use the submission points in Blackboard.

If you have not received an outcome by the date of your proposed extended deadline, please submit your work to Ask a Question on RISIS by this deadline to prevent any late penalties.

It is better to submit work in an unfinished state, rather than fail to submit any work, so that you are not penalised for late submission.

If you do not receive the outcome of your Exceptional Circumstances request by the submission deadline or your proposed extended deadline:

  1. Submit your draft work before the submission deadline via Ask a Question in RISIS (do not upload your work to the normal Blackboard or Turnitin submission point)
  2. Use the Ask a Question category: Dissertation Help, Coursework Assignments.
  3. Use the Ask a Question enquiry title: Assessment submission for MODULE CODE (deadline: DATE) – EC outcome pending

Submitting via Ask a Question by the normal deadline (or your proposed extended deadline) will ensure that your draft does not accrue any late penalty; it will not be marked until your Exceptional Circumstances outcome is known.

You should continue to work on your assessment after submission, pending the outcome of your exceptional circumstances request.

If your exceptional circumstances request is rejected:

The programme administration team will upload the work you sent to Ask a Question to the submission point in Blackboard on your behalf. The date and time you sent the query (with your work attached) will be taken as the time you submitted your work.

If your exceptional circumstances request is approved:

The programme administration team will disregard the assignment you sent to Ask a Question. You will be able to submit to the normal submission point in Blackboard ahead of your extended deadline.

If you have any queries about the information above, or the status of your Exceptional Circumstances form, or you have problems submitting you work, please log a query on “Ask a Question” on RISIS and your Programme Administrator or Student Support Coordinator will get back to you as appropriate.

My submission is anonymous, do I need to do anything extra?

If your submission is anonymous, please be careful to follow the instructions provided with regard to naming conventions for your submission.

Your submission via Ask a Question will not be anonymous but it will not be seen by the marker/moderator. If, following your exceptional circumstances outcome, your assignment is submitted for marking, the submission will be anonymous.

What do I do if I already submitted the assessment, before I put in my exceptional circumstances request?

If you have already submitted your work through Blackboard before submitting an exceptional circumstances request, please contact your Support Centre, preferably via Ask a Question, to arrange that your submission is not marked until the outcome of your exceptional circumstances request is known.

If your submission is anonymous, please notify your Support Centre of your Turnitin submission number so that your assessment can be identified.

If you have submitted a self-certified exceptional circumstances request, and have already submitted your work, please contact your Support Centre, preferably via Ask a Question, to arrange that this submission is not marked.

What will happen to my assignment submission when the outcome of my exceptional circumstances request is received?

If your exceptional circumstances request is granted after you have submitted your work and you have the opportunity to submit to a new, later deadline, your Support Centre will close your Ask a Question enquiry and nothing will be done with the assessment. You will then submit your assessment by the new extended deadline.

If your exceptional circumstances request is rejected after you have submitted your work, your Support Centre will submit your submission anonymously for you and alert the marker. No penalty will apply as long as you have submitted your work before the submission deadline (through “Ask a Question”).
