If you are expected to submit handwritten work, it should have been set up to &#8216;Allow any file type&#8217;. If this is unclear please check with your Programme Administration team.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: revert;background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5)\">You can submit either a:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Scanned PDF<\/li>\n<li>or a Word Document with scanned\/ inserted images.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To avoid problems when submitting your file, and for the academic who will mark your work, we recommend that you submit <strong>a\u00a0document (PDF or Word) containing a minimum of 20 typed words <\/strong>which Turnitin can identify as<strong> selectable text<\/strong>, in addition to your scanned images or text.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is not necessary of &#8220;Allow any File type&#8221; has been set-up by your administrator.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4240 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/93\/2019\/02\/20-words-error-message-1.png\" alt=\"Submission error message for twenty words or less\" width=\"680\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/93\/2019\/02\/20-words-error-message-1.png 680w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/93\/2019\/02\/20-words-error-message-1-150x79.png 150w, https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/93\/2019\/02\/20-words-error-message-1-366x194.png 366w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This guide explains how to add this so Turnitin will accept your submission.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Scanned PDF: <\/strong>You will need to edit the scanned pdf, and add 20 words of text using Adobe Reader.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Word Document with inserted images:<\/strong> After inserting images into your Word document you will need to type 20 words of text.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Turnitin maximum file size is 100MB.<\/strong>\u00a0If the size of your scanned PDF or Word document is larger than 100MB, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support-students\/reducing-file-size-for-online-submission\/\">reduce the size of the file<\/a><\/strong> before attempting to upload it to Turnitin. You can reduce the overall quality of the scanned images but <strong>do not go below 220ppi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b>Scanning your handwritten work for submission<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3>University printers<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are using the University Printers: make sure you are scanning with the correct settings &#8211; the default PDF options should be good enough, but check the result in your email before you submit.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure there is a strong contrast between the written text and paper..<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>On a smartphone<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Write your answers<\/strong> to the questions onto plain, lined or graph A4 paper where possible, please include a number on the page that indicates the order.<\/li>\n<li>On your mobile phone, use a scanning App, such as:\n<ul>\n<li><strong> Microsoft Office Lens<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/microsoft-office-lens-for-ios-fbdca5f4-1b1b-4391-a931-dc1c2582397b?ui=en-us&amp;rs=en-us&amp;ad=us\">Android<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/microsoft-office-lens-for-ios-fbdca5f4-1b1b-4391-a931-dc1c2582397b?ui=en-us&amp;rs=en-us&amp;ad=us\">iOS<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Microsoft Office app\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aka.ms\/OfficeAppAndroid\">Android<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/aka.ms\/OfficeAppiOS\">iOS<\/a><\/li>\n<li>or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT210336\">Apple iOS Notes Scanner<\/a>,<\/strong> to capture your pages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Take the scan in a <strong>well-lit<\/strong> environment<\/li>\n<li>Check that the scan is <strong>readable<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Save the scans<strong> as a single PDF<\/strong> document \u2013 both the Office apps and iOS Notes can do this for you.<strong>Don&#8217;t<\/strong> use the OCR tools built into these apps to convert the image to text &#8211; this will almost certainly introduce some errors.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Inserting 20 words of text<\/h3>\n<p>If you are submitting to a Turnitin Assignment you may\u00a0<strong>need to add 20 words of selectable text<\/strong>, or your submission will not be accepted and you will see the following message:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:quote --><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>We weren&#8217;t able to process your submission. Please try re-submitting your file. If you need further assistance, please contact TurnitinUK support.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><!-- \/wp:quote --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>To submit your document, use the following instructions.<\/p>\n<h3>Example text to copy and paste into your document<\/h3>\n<p>In order for this submission to correctly submit and render inside the Turnitin Feedback Studio, it needs 20 selectable words as part of the document.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h3>Word Document<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>To submit a Microsoft Word file with screenshots or scanned images inserted, please type 20 words of selectable text. This can be any text.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:preformatted --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:preformatted --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h3>PDF<\/h3>\n<p>For this to work, it must be done with Adobe Reader. If you do not have Adobe Reader, it can be downloaded for free <a href=\"https:\/\/get.adobe.com\/uk\/reader\/\">from Adobe&#8217;s website<\/a>. If you used the Office Lens app to scan handwritten work to PDF, you can use the Text tool (<strong>T\u00a0<\/strong>icon) on the &#8216;Review and Edit&#8217; screen\u00a0to add text.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<h4>Use Adobe Reader to insert text<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Open the file<\/strong> and in the <strong>Tools<\/strong> menu on the right-hand side find the <strong>&#8220;Fill &amp; Sign&#8221; tool<\/strong>.
