Options for exams Summer 2022
The standard format for exams in 2022 is, as in previous years, online ‘Take Home Exams’, available for 23 hours. In some cases these may be time-limited, so that once started, students have to complete the exam in a set time.
Standard 23 hour online exam
- ‘Take Home Exam’ – students submit online.
- Exam opens at 10am with all submissions due by 9am the next day.
- Any approved assessment tool can be used.
Time-limited 23 hour online exam
- ‘Take Home Exam’ – students submit online.
- Exam opens at 10am with all submissions due by 9am the next day.
- Once started, the student must complete the exam within a set time limit (say within 3 hours).
- Only certain assessment tools (Blackboard Tests and Gradescope) provide this option.
Additional options in 2022 for a minority of exams:
In person exams
- Where there are strong pedagogic reasons for exams to take place in person.
- Eligible exams have already been approved, and Schools notified.
Fixed Start/Finish online exam
- Where there are strong pedagogic reasons, and options above are not appropriate or practically possible.
- Very limited availability for 2022 – approval required by SDTL and Teaching & Learning Dean.
- ‘Take Home Exam’ – students submit online.
- Exam opens at 10am and closes at a set time on the same day (say 1pm).
- Any approved assessment tool can be used.

Exam timing | Assessment tool | Similarity checking | Comments |
Standard 23 hour exam | Set up 2 assessments:
|

Blackboard Test (mixture of MCQs and File Response questions) | No
Gradescope online assignment | No
Time- limited 23 hour exam | Blackboard Test (mixture of MCQs and File Response questions) | No

Fixed Start/Finish exam | Set up 2 assessments:

Where the 2 parts of a multipart exam would best be served by different assessment tools (e.g. a Blackboard Test + Gradescope) it is possible to split the exam into 2 separate assessments.
Disadvantage of this approach: students no longer have the freedom to choose how long to spend on each part.
