They are used during in-person and\/or live online teaching, to create active learning experiences and scaffold collaboration between students.<\/p>\n<p>The University offers a variety of tools that allow students to participate in classroom activities via written formats, using rich media or through taking part in quizzing, word clouds and\/or polling.<\/p>\n<h3>Why<\/h3>\n<p>Student response apps offer some key benefits to scheduled teaching:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Democratising student contributions:<\/strong> allowing everyone to take part in an inclusive and supported manner.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anonymous feedback<\/strong>: Students can respond anonymously, which encourages participation from those who might be hesitant to speak up.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Immediate Results<\/strong>: Responses are collected instantly, allowing for immediate feedback and discussion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Integration with Other Tools<\/strong>: Many student response apps integrate with platforms like PowerPoint, Blackboard, and Microsoft Teams, making them versatile for different teaching scenarios.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Institutional tools: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/toolsandtechnologies\/using-padlet-for-teaching\/\">Padlet<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/2025\/05\/29\/teaching-with-ms-forms\/\">Microsoft Forms<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Free\/freemium tools:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Use of the following freemium \u2018student response\u2019 apps has been approved by the university <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/it-beat\/design-authority-group\/\">Design Authority Group (DAG).<\/a> These freemium plans are restricted in usage\/participant numbers, and are not suitable for large class teaching.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: TEL cannot provide technical support for the use of free\/freemium technologies,<\/strong><strong> and users must be aware of the risks when using unsupported technologies with their students. <\/strong>Please see <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/considerations-when-using-free-apps-for-tl\/\">considerations when using\u00a0 free apps<\/a> before signing up to use an online platform.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support\/2021\/01\/21\/kahoot\/\">Kahoot!<\/a>*Personal \u2013 Basic plan\u2019 allows 10 participants. <a href=\"https:\/\/kahoot.com\/register\/pricing-personal\/?deviceId=csr1vTjZ6B2So3Da-2P3wL&amp;sessionId=1714661251866\">More information.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support\/2021\/10\/01\/mentimeter\/\">Mentimeter<\/a> *\u2019Free Plan\u2019 allows 50 participant responses per month. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/telblog\/2024\/05\/07\/menti-changes-to-the-free-plan-2024-and-recommended-alternatives\/\">More information.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support\/2021\/10\/01\/socrative\/\">Socrative<\/a> *\u2019Free Plan\u2019 allows 5 quizzes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socrative.com\/blog\/news\/updates-to-the-socrative-free-plan\/\">More information.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Relevant CQSD staff development<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Microsoft 365 Apps in the Classroom (Webinar) <a href=\"https:\/\/uorlearn.sabacloud.com\/Saba\/Web_spf\/EU2PRD0149\/common\/ledetail\/cours000000000083202\/latestversion\">Book your place<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Getting Started with Padlet (Webinar) <a href=\"https:\/\/uorlearn.sabacloud.com\/Saba\/Web_spf\/EU2PRD0149\/common\/ledetail\/cours000000000086022\/latestversion\">Book your place<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Getting Started with Padlet (in person) <a href=\"https:\/\/uorlearn.sabacloud.com\/Saba\/Web_spf\/EU2PRD0149\/common\/ledetail\/cours000000000086023\/latestversion\">Book your place<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Student response apps, also known as audience response or classroom response systems, are tools designed to enhance student engagement and interaction during scheduled sessions.
