{"id":5649,"date":"2020-06-30T16:06:55","date_gmt":"2020-06-30T16:06:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/?page_id=5649"},"modified":"2022-06-10T12:18:09","modified_gmt":"2022-06-10T12:18:09","slug":"when-should-i-run-a-webinar","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/using-webinars-in-t-l\/when-should-i-run-a-webinar\/","title":{"rendered":"When do I run a Live Online Session?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">You may wish to use live online sessions for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><b>An active learning session <\/b>that incorporates class or small group discussion, questioning and collaborative exercises, building upon student knowledge acquisition from their reading, learning materials and asynchronous resources<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Fostering a sense of <b>cohort identity and community <\/b>by conducting online tutorials where students can ask questions, express concerns and get to know their teacher and peers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Having direct 1:1 <b>communication with students <\/b>online in the form of tutorials or virtual office hours where social distancing or absence from campus makes it difficult to communicate in person<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Approaches to live online sessions<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">An online session without interactivity at its core can easily become a passive learning experience for learners as they may be more vulnerable to environmental distractions outside the classroom and may experience greater cognitive load.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">An effective live online session could incorporate some or all of the following components:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Short segments of <strong>teacher-led presentation<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Discussion using audio and video<\/strong> between students and teacher, or using<strong> text-based chat moderated by the teacher<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Small collaborative activities to collect ideas and opinions<\/strong>, such as collective <strong>use of whiteboards and annotation<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Breakout group exercises<\/strong> where students are separated into smaller rooms, to research and discuss something together<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Small presentations from students on their application of topics or theory in scenario-based exercises<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Voting and poll-based feedback<\/strong> exercises on questions or topics<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Open <strong>student-led question &amp; answer<\/strong> exercises<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Group or individual tutorials<\/strong> and meetings<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Tools for hosting live online sessions<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The university has access to two primary platforms that can accommodate live online sessions:<\/span><\/p>\n<style>#sp-ea-5784 .spcollapsing { height: 0;
