The platform is ideal for questioning and discussion and can draw out they key knowledge acquisition from other areas, for instance <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14pt\">following learning asynchronously in the form of screencasts and reading.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The key to running small group sessions is to <strong>foster an environment of participation, activity and inclusivity.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Activities for small group sessions<\/h2>\n<h2>Collaboration<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Utilise the tools within your online environment that allow students to work collaboratively<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Share a<b> whiteboard or blank slide<\/b>, getting students to <b>contribute ideas or answers<\/b> to a question by writing on the whiteboard<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Use an image, map or diagram and get students to <b>highlight key parts<\/b> by drawing shapes or annotating<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Discussion<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"730\" height=\"411\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nrWUi9Gy020?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><b>Pose a question to your students<\/b>, either standalone or with accompanying images \/ data in your slide deck<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Invite your students to share their thoughts using the chat. <strong>Break from talking for 30 seconds &#8211; 1 minute<\/strong> to allow students to compose their responses and post them in chat, and to give you the chance to skim through their answers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><b>Respond<\/b> to answers <b>collectively by drawing out common themes<\/b>, and<b> individually by speaking to student<\/b><strong>s<\/strong> by name and talking about their answer.<b> Invite and encourage them to elaborate <\/b>on microphone, if they feel comfortable doing so.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><b>Recap the most important points<\/b> that came out in the chat before moving on with presentation or next activity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Peer Learning<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><b>Settle students into a session<\/b> with short sections of presentation, interspersed<b> with small chat-based discussions <\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Split the students up into <b>small groups of 3-5<\/b>, working on researching and discussing a common topic, or assign each group a smaller element of a larger topic to create a jigsaw activity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Have them work for <b>10-20 minutes in their separate groups<\/b> to discuss together and<b> produce a short output<\/b> of what they&#8217;ve discussed<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Bring them back into the main class room.
