{"id":5655,"date":"2020-06-30T16:03:11","date_gmt":"2020-06-30T16:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/?page_id=5655"},"modified":"2025-05-15T20:23:06","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T20:23:06","slug":"set-piece-lectures","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/using-webinars-in-t-l\/set-piece-lectures\/","title":{"rendered":"Set piece lectures"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Recommended class size: up to and exceeding 250+<\/h2>\n<h2>Recommended length: up to 90 minutes<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">There may be situations that require large group sessions, such as <strong>one-off set piece lectures with a guest lecturer,<\/strong> where it is not feasible to create a smaller series of asynchronous learning objects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">You may wish to arrange and set up a &#8220;set piece lecture&#8221; where students and your guest join one another in a session for a lecture-style presentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>If you are going to have large sessions above 250 participants, please note:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">MS Teams Meetings have a recommended participant limit of <strong>300<\/strong>, after which call quality may degrade. See <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/best-practices-for-a-large-teams-meeting-ce2cdb9a-0546-43a4-bb55-34ab98ab6b16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft best practices for running a large meeting using Teams<\/a>. You can also speak with DTS if you intend to run a large session.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What interactions should I use?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Your guest may have interactions planned where they ask questions to their audiences<\/strong> or wish to use polls or other quizzing applications. <strong>Work out at the planning stage how these interactions can be implemented in their presentation.<\/strong> It is likely that online webinars of this format will be less active than your usual webinars, however.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><b>Chat<\/b> &#8211; Think about how you wish to use the chat in a session like this. <strong>Your guest may not be used to answering questions or following chat during a webinar<\/strong> as a live exercise and <strong>may prefer to answer questions towards the end.<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong> Let your students know how you&#8217;d like them to use the chat facility and when it is appropriate for them to ask questions or make comments<\/strong>. You may decide that you want to <strong>disable the chat functionality until the end of the presentation<\/strong> for the lecturer to take questions, or <strong>take on the role of a moderator yourself to &#8216;collect&#8217; questions<\/strong> to feed to the presenter at a particular time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><b>Audio \/ Video<\/b> &#8211; <strong>Good quality audio for your presenter is essential<\/strong>, a set piece lecture will likely be heavier on presentation than an active learning based webinar. Video is also good for building a connection with the attendees and letting them see who is presenting. <strong>You may want to consider disabling these features for attendees, only enabling microphones during questions, for example.<\/strong> Retain control of this interaction by asking students to raise their hands to be invited to speak.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><b>Polls<\/b> &#8211; these can be a quick and effective way of <strong>getting audience responses and feedback.<\/strong> Can you make use of the built in polling tool in Blackboard Collaborate or perhaps you want to share a Mentimeter or Padlet with your students to collate questions during the presentation. <strong>Plan in advance who will be charge of setting them up and whether the presenter needs someone to moderate these activities for them.\u00a0<\/strong>Guidance:<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support\/2020\/12\/17\/polls-in-microsoft-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Polls in Microsoft Teams<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Practice with your guest<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Guest lecturers or speakers may not be familiar with your online platform<\/strong> or may not have taught in this way at all before. Let them know in advance what to expect by <strong>sending them resources to read about how the tool works and, if possible, arrange a short practice session<\/strong> with them so that they can become familiar with the environment before their presentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Ask them to use a supported browser, such as Google Chrome<\/strong>, when joining your session, or to <strong>download the Teams app<\/strong> if they can.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">You will be inviting them using a guest link, make sure you know where to find the links.
