It is preferable to use a headset to improve audio quality rather than an inbuilt microphone, but be aware of your voice. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family: Calibri\">Avoid reading directly from your notes.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"> This can flatten the tone of your voice. Instead, use your notes as a <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-family: Calibri\">prompt <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">and aim to talk &#8216;around&#8217; your slides using a natural, conversational tone, including the &#8216;ums&#8217; and &#8216;ahs&#8217; of everyday discourse which allow learners to process your language. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family: Calibri\">Pause and allow time for participants to \u2018digest\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"> what you have said and what\u2019s on the screen. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family: Calibri\">Describe what you are doing,<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"> so participants know what is happening and why you might have stopped talking or there is a short silence. A conversational approach is friendlier and will reassure participants.<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: 14pt\">For example: \u201cI\u2019m just bringing up the slides I want to show you\u2026\u201d \u201cI\u2019m going to read your chat messages for questions\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Holding conversations<\/h2>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: .375in;direction: ltr;margin-top: 0in;margin-bottom: 0in\" type=\"disc\">\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: 14pt\">Deliberately pause and wait for responses to allow for audio lag and let participants switch on their mics. (You may need to remind them to do this.) You and your students will adapt to this with practice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family: Calibri\">Ask larger groups to mute their mics whilst not speaking<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"> to prevent unintended noise. Remember as moderator you can mute all participants (from the attendees panel) if you encounter feedback noise.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family: Calibri\">Ask specific participants to respond<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"> (speak on mic) to prevent everyone trying to answer at once. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family: Calibri\">Use the Hand Raise tool<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"> to identify who wants to speak and go through them in the order in which they raised their hand. You can also use the Chat to manage this process.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Dealing with questions and handling Chat<\/h2>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: .375in;direction: ltr;margin-top: 0in;margin-bottom: 0in\" type=\"disc\">\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family: Calibri\">Manage expectations at the beginning of the session.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0Explain how you would like questions to be asked (e.g. in chat at key points \/ when you invite learners to come on mic, etc).<\/span><\/span>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: .375in;direction: ltr;margin-top: 0in;margin-bottom: 0in\" type=\"circle\">\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family: Calibri\">For large group sessions<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">, you may wish to point out that you won\u2019t respond so much to questions during the webinar but that there will be time at the end for questions and answers (Q&amp;A).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family: Calibri\">There may be questions that you won\u2019t have time to address.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"> Give an indication of what participants should do in this scenario (e.g. post any follow up questions to your blackboard forum).<\/span><\/span>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: .375in;direction: ltr;margin-top: 0in;margin-bottom: 0in\" type=\"circle\">\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: 14pt\">It is usually less distracting to deal with questions at key points during the session and spend the rest of the time focusing on content or activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family: Calibri\">Invite participants to write their questions in chat as you go along<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">. You can then address them later. If you have an assistant they may answer questions in chat or identify key questions \/ themes and share them with you.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family: Calibri\">When you respond to a question, it can be helpful to repeat it back to the participants.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"> When you have finished addressing the question, close it clearly before you move on.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Useful phrases for responding to questions in Chat<\/h2>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: .375in;direction: ltr;margin-top: 0in;margin-bottom: 0in\" type=\"disc\">\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: 14pt\">&#8220;There\u2019s an interesting question here from Angelic.
