Captioning is a\u00a0<\/span>legal requirement on any pre-recorded video material<\/span><\/a>\u00a0available on U<\/span>niversity webpages (including Blackboard) from 23<\/span>rd<\/span>\u00a0September 2020<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Be aware that recordings of live video events that are less than 14 days old are exempt from the legislation.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

What are\u00a0captions,\u00a0transcripts, and\u00a0subtitles?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Transcription is<\/span>\u00a0the process in which speech or audio<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0converted to text, whereas\u00a0<\/span>captioning<\/span>\u00a0divides\u00a0<\/span>transcript<\/span>\u00a0text into\u00a0into\u00a0time-coded chunks so that it can be displayed in real-time\u00a0alongside\u00a0the content of a video.<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Captions<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u2013 the time-coded sections of a transcript that align text to the point at which the audio occurs in a video<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Subtitles<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u2013 whereas captions are designed to benefit viewers who cannot hear the audio in a video, subtitles are designed to benefit viewers who cannot understand the language in a video<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
