Captioned videos\u00a0 allow students to access video content in a variety of <strong>different environments<\/strong>, such as <strong>public transport<\/strong>, without the need for headphones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><figure id=\"attachment_7177\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7177\" style=\"width: 848px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img class=\"wp-image-7177 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2020\/09\/deafhoh.png\" alt=\"cartoon showing someone with a hearing aid, a couple reading airport captions, and a child learning to read\" width=\"848\" height=\"282\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7177\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\"...closed captioning was created for the hard of hearing community. But, there are many benefits of captioning such as reading in a crowded airport, or, teaching children how to read \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/design\/inclusive\/\">Microsoft Inclusive Design Toolkit<\/a>\"<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Accurate captioning provides<strong> greater access and accessibility<\/strong> to your learning materials\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and fosters an environment of<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/accessibility-and-inclusive-practice\/introduction-and-policy\/#InclusiveWhat\">proactive inclusion<\/a><\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in your teaching<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ea-card sp-ea-single\"><h3 class=\"ea-header\"><a class=\"collapsed\" id=\"ea-header-87211\" role=\"button\" data-sptoggle=\"spcollapse\" data-sptarget=\"#collapse87211\" aria-controls=\"collapse87211\" href=\"#\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\"><i aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\" class=\"ea-expand-icon eap-icon-ea-expand-plus\"><\/i> How can I generate automatic captioning on my videos?<\/a><\/h3><div class=\"sp-collapse spcollapse spcollapse\" id=\"collapse87211\" data-parent=\"#sp-ea-8721\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"ea-header-87211\"> <div class=\"ea-body\"><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support\/2022\/05\/30\/uploading-to-yuja\/\">Upload your video to YuJa<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>- hosting your video content in YuJa creates a more consistent experience for your students and enables accessibility features, such as automatic captions.<\/p><p>Classroom Capture videos created with YuJa will automatically be uploaded to YuJa. Automatic captions will be generated as part of the post-upload processing.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ea-card sp-ea-single\"><h3 class=\"ea-header\"><a class=\"collapsed\" id=\"ea-header-87212\" role=\"button\" data-sptoggle=\"spcollapse\" data-sptarget=\"#collapse87212\" aria-controls=\"collapse87212\" href=\"#\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\"><i aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\" class=\"ea-expand-icon eap-icon-ea-expand-plus\"><\/i> How do I edit captions on my videos?<\/a><\/h3><div class=\"sp-collapse spcollapse spcollapse\" id=\"collapse87212\" data-parent=\"#sp-ea-8721\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"ea-header-87212\"> <div class=\"ea-body\"><p>If you decide to edit the captions on your videos, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support\/2022\/05\/09\/editing-with-yuja\/#capedit\">do so in the browser using YuJa.<\/a><\/p><p>The caption editor in YuJa is intuitive and\u00a0 has the following features, to assist in editing:<\/p><ul><li>Search<\/li><li>Find &amp; Replace<\/li><li>Replace All - We recommend using caution when using Replace All<\/li><li>Insert Caption - To add manually add single lines of Captions. To upload your own caption file, see our guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support\/2022\/05\/24\/yuja-accessibility\/#manupcap\">manually uploading captions<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><p>Edits made in the editor will be reflected in the Transcript upon saving.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ea-card sp-ea-single\"><h3 class=\"ea-header\"><a class=\"collapsed\" id=\"ea-header-87213\" role=\"button\" data-sptoggle=\"spcollapse\" data-sptarget=\"#collapse87213\" aria-controls=\"collapse87213\" href=\"#\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\"><i aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\" class=\"ea-expand-icon eap-icon-ea-expand-plus\"><\/i> How accurate do my captions need to be?<\/a><\/h3><div class=\"sp-collapse spcollapse spcollapse\" id=\"collapse87213\" data-parent=\"#sp-ea-8721\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"ea-header-87213\"> <div class=\"ea-body\"><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In most cases, the automatically generated\u00a0captions should be reasonably accurate, but automatic\u00a0captioning can have variable levels of success and it is best to <strong>manage student expectations<\/strong> as to the accuracy of\u00a0captions.<\/span><\/p><p>If you have a student with a captioning requirement, checking that any terms which are key to understanding the content of a video should be prioritised. We recommend communicating with any students in your cohort with a captioning requirement to discuss their needs.<\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Being aware of the needs of your cohort and individual students will help you decide how accurate your captions should be, however there are\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/accessibility-and-inclusive-practice\/creating-accessible-teaching-materials\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">benefits to ensuring that all captions are accurate<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p><h2>Prioritise key terms<\/h2><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you find that large amounts of your captions are inaccurate, or key information is not captioned correctly, you should pay particular attention to correcting:<\/span><\/p><ul><li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Subject specific language<\/strong><\/li><li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Any phrases or terms\u00a0that are crucial to understanding the topic of the video<\/strong><\/li><li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Core information that is not also represented visually on screen (including auditory events or noises)<\/strong><\/li><li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Any narration of visual events on screen<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">YuJa's automatic transcription uses machine learning to improve its capabilities, so the more errors you correct, the more accurate the transcript will be in future. You can also <a href=\"https:\/\/support.yuja.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360049420953-Using-the-Auto-Captioning-Dictionary#adding-phrases-to-the-dictionary-0-2\">add words to a personal Dictionary in YuJa<\/a> to prompt it to recognise phrases which you use regularly.<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If captioning cannot, for any reason, be provided for a video, then an alternative format should be provided. This could be a written transcript or supporting document. If a video is summarising or replicating content that already exists in an alternative format (such as a handout, or lecture notes), then it may not require a transcript and should be labelled in a way that makes this clear. Always ensure you have communicated with your students who have a captioning need to ensure that alternative formats are providing them sufficient information.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ea-card sp-ea-single\"><h3 class=\"ea-header\"><a class=\"collapsed\" id=\"ea-header-87214\" role=\"button\" data-sptoggle=\"spcollapse\" data-sptarget=\"#collapse87214\" aria-controls=\"collapse87214\" href=\"#\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\"><i aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\" class=\"ea-expand-icon eap-icon-ea-expand-plus\"><\/i> How can I improve the quality of automatic captions?<\/a><\/h3><div class=\"sp-collapse spcollapse spcollapse\" id=\"collapse87214\" data-parent=\"#sp-ea-8721\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"ea-header-87214\"> <div class=\"ea-body\"><h2>When you're recording<\/h2><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Accuracy of automatically generated\u00a0captions rely on several factors including, but not limited to:<\/span><\/p><ul><li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Audio quality -\u00a0<\/strong>ensuring that you are recording somewhere quiet can vastly improve the accuracy of captions<\/li><li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Volume and pace of the narration<\/strong> - speaking clearly and slowly will produce more accurate captions<\/li><li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Use of subject-specific terms, multiple languages, or names <\/strong>- these are more likely to be the source of errors in automatic captioning<\/li><\/ul><h2>After uploading<\/h2><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">YuJa's automatic transcription uses machine learning to improve its capabilities, so the more errors you correct, the more accurate the transcript will be in future.
