{"id":8327,"date":"2021-03-19T15:59:05","date_gmt":"2021-03-19T15:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/?page_id=8327"},"modified":"2021-08-13T10:13:36","modified_gmt":"2021-08-13T10:13:36","slug":"creating-resources","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/design-your-blackboard-module\/creating-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Creating Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The way you create the material on Blackboard, and the files you upload, can have an impact on your students and their ability to engage with your content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Providing your students with a variety of materials to engage with content, such as multimedia like videos or audio files or further reading, helps to <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/accessibility-and-inclusive-practice\/\">diversify access<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/online-teaching-toolkits\/maintaining-contact-engagement\/\">maintain engagement<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Use this page as a checklist to help you design resources.<\/p>\n<h2>Design for accessibility<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/s-c-u-l-p-t-for-accessibility\/\">Apply S.C.U.L.P.T<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; these 6 principles will help ensure that your documents and resources are as accessible as possible<\/li>\n<li><strong>Upload video to Stream<\/strong> &#8211; uploading video content to Stream provides captioning, which can benefit students with auditory disabilities and students for whom English is a second language. You may not have permission to upload third-party content to Stream (see Using Third Party Content)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Include summary notes with your slides<\/strong> &#8211; students will benefit more fully by receiving slides with notes in advance<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukaaf.org\/standards\/#accessible-images\">Provide alt text<\/a>, or an accessible alternative, for images, charts &amp; graphs<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8211; describing complex images\u00a0 aids students with visual disabilities and offers alternative ways to engage with content<\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid using <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/visual-design-for-blackboard-modules\/\">images, bold text, or text colour to convey meaning<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; ensure that your meaning can be understood without visual indicators<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/accessibility-checkers\/\">accessibility checkers<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; checkers\u00a0like <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support\/category\/blackboard-ally\/\">Blackboard Ally<\/a> &amp; the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/improve-accessibility-with-the-accessibility-checker-a16f6de0-2f39-4a2b-8bd8-5ad801426c7f\">Microsoft Accessibility Checker<\/a> offer guidance on accessibility issues in your resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Fonts &amp; styles<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Consider fonts &amp; spacing<\/strong> &#8211; using <a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/uploads\/articles\/accessible_fonts_guide.pdf\">clear, sans-serif fonts<\/a>\u00a0helps students with dyslexia;\u00a0 avoid narrow spacing on lines and paragraphs; avoid large blocks of italic or underlined text<\/li>\n<li><strong>Printed material<\/strong> &#8211; print in at least 12pt; consider\u00a0 background colours<\/li>\n<li><strong>Online material<\/strong> &#8211; use the default font and font size in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support\/2020\/11\/05\/blackboard-learn-content-editor-2020\/\">Blackboard text editor<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Give students control<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Provide original filetypes for students<\/strong> &#8211; original filetypes allow students to convert them to their preferred format<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diversify content<\/strong> &#8211; offer multiple routes of engagement with material through video, text and other media<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide full references for linked resources<\/strong> &#8211; providing references helps students in their assessments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Reading Lists<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use the Reading Lists tool<\/strong> &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.reading.ac.uk\/reading-lists\/staff\">Reading Lists tool<\/a> allows you to<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support\/2018\/08\/16\/blackboard-setting-up-links-to-your-talis-reading-list\/\"> link to Talis Aspire<\/a>\u00a0and provide students with a single point of access to library resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Using Third Party Content<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Check Copyright<\/strong> &#8211; the Library team offer a wide range of <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.reading.ac.uk\/copyright\">guidance for using third-party and copyright content<\/a> in your module.
