Whether you are recording a lecture, creating short videos to offer additional support, or using recordings to flip your classroom, recordings can play a valuable role in supporting students\u2019 learning and success.<\/p>\n
Why make recordings?<\/h2>\n
Recordings can support student success, flexibility and inclusion. They provide a valuable study aid, helping students to consolidate their learning, revisit material and overcome temporary barriers to participating in their studies.<\/p>\n
Benefits for students include:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n- Learning at their own pace by pausing and rewatching material.<\/li>\n
- Revisiting complex terminology, concepts and explanations.<\/li>\n
- Supporting study alongside work, caring responsibilities or long commutes.<\/li>\n
- Aiding understanding for students with English as an additional language.<\/li>\n
- Improving access for disabled students, including those who may not have disclosed a disability.<\/li>\n
- Helping students stay on track during illness or other temporary disruption.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
I think the materials (recorded videos of the class) available on Blackboard really helped with personal study – Undergraduate student (2024)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\nWhat am I expected to record?<\/h2>\n
The University Recording Policy<\/a> sets out what staff are expected to record, while recognising that what is appropriate will vary between disciplines, modules and teaching activities.<\/p>\nYou are expected to record:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n- Staff-led, presentation-style sessions, or relevant parts of those sessions, to ensure that core module content is recorded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
You are not expected to record:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n- Sessions or parts of sessions that are primarily student-led or discussion-based, such as seminars and tutorials.<\/li>\n
- Activities involving sensitive, personal or confidential information.<\/li>\n
- Activities where a recording would not be useful to students.<\/li>\n
- Yourself on camera. Where cameras are available, their use is optional and should be guided by what will be useful to students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
You can:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n- Record just part of a session (e.g. the first 20 minutes of a lecture containing a presentation).<\/li>\n
- Record student-led or discussion-based activities where it is appropriate, while taking account of the data protection implications of recording students.<\/li>\n
- Decide not to share a recording if, after the session, you determine that it would not be appropriate or useful. Let students know as soon as possible if an expected recording will not be made available.<\/li>\n
- Decide whether to use the board\/tracking cameras in equipped rooms if capturing board work or front-of-room explanation adds value for students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
