{"id":3383,"date":"2017-12-05T16:58:20","date_gmt":"2017-12-05T16:58:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/?p=3383"},"modified":"2017-12-05T16:58:20","modified_gmt":"2017-12-05T16:58:20","slug":"changes-to-inline-grading-in-blackboard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/2017\/12\/05\/changes-to-inline-grading-in-blackboard\/","title":{"rendered":"Changes to Inline Grading in Blackboard"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>What is changing?<\/h1>\n<p>The Inline Grading features in Blackboard make use of a third party tool called Crocodoc.<\/p>\n<p>The company who own Crocodoc are moving to a new tool called Box, and all Blackboard institutions need to switch to this new interface by 15th January 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We will be making the transition to Box at the start of the working day on Wednesday 10th\u00a0January.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new Box interface is very similar to the current Crocodoc interface.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 575px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2017-09\/learn_admin_new_box_view_ultra_annotations.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2017-09\/learn_admin_new_box_view_ultra_annotations.png\" alt=\"Comparison of Crocodoc and Box\" width=\"575\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Comparison of Crocodoc and Box<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Box is able to display many more file types than is currently possible. In particular, you will be able to view image, audio and video files inside the Blackboard marking interface, and will also be able to annotate JPG and PNG image files inside Blackboard.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a smaller range of annotation options available in Crocodoc, but when marking Word documents, PDFs and similar files, you will still be able to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>highlight text<\/li>\n<li>highlight text and add a comment<\/li>\n<li>add a text comment anywhere on the submitted paper<br \/>\n(this option is also available when annotating image files)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3386\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3386\" style=\"width: 575px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/12\/Box-add-comment.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3386 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/12\/Box-add-comment.png\" alt=\"Box - adding a comment\" width=\"575\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3386\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Box &#8211; adding a comment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3387\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3387\" style=\"width: 575px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/12\/Box-adding-comment-to-highlighted-text.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3387 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/12\/Box-adding-comment-to-highlighted-text.png\" alt=\"Box - adding a comment to highlighted text\" width=\"575\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3387\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Box &#8211; adding a comment to highlighted text<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3403\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3403\" style=\"width: 589px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/12\/Box-add-comment-to-JPG.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3403\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/12\/Box-add-comment-to-JPG.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"589\" height=\"328\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Box &#8211; add comment to a JPG image file<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One function which is not available in Box, is the ability for staff and students to download papers with the annotations left by markers. By switching to the new Box viewer on 10th\u00a0January we hope to avoid any inconvenience to staff marking work due on or before 8th\u00a0December.<\/p>\n<p>However we are aware that there are some Blackboard assignments \u2013 particularly those set up for late submission after the due date \u2013 where our move to Box falls within the 15 day turnaround period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are marking work where 10th\u00a0January falls within the 15 day turnaround period<\/strong>, please ensure that any annotations you make before 10th\u00a0January are in their final version \u2013 i.e. make sure that your annotations do not require editing before they become visible to students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1>What is affected \/ what is not affected<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>This change affects only <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/support-blackboard\/blackboard-support-staff-assessment\/blackboard-support-staff-assignment-tool\/\">Blackboard assignments<\/a>. Turnitin assignments are not affected.<\/li>\n<li>This change affects only annotations made using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bb.reading.ac.uk\/bbcswebdav\/xid-4905495_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inline grading<\/a> features.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>does not<\/strong> affect\n<ul>\n<li>feedback provided via an uploaded feedback file<\/li>\n<li>feedback typed into the \u2018Feedback to Learner\u2019 area<\/li>\n<li>student Grades<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Switching to the new interface is a relatively quick process, and we do not expect it to cause any disruption to students submitting work, or to the Blackboard service as a whole.
