{"id":3440,"date":"2017-12-18T14:30:41","date_gmt":"2017-12-18T14:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/?p=3440"},"modified":"2019-12-16T14:55:49","modified_gmt":"2019-12-16T14:55:49","slug":"blackboard-upgrade-complete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/2017\/12\/18\/blackboard-upgrade-complete\/","title":{"rendered":"December 2017 Blackboard upgrade complete"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last night&#8217;s upgrade completed successfully, and the system was made available to users again at around 10.30 this morning.<\/p>\n<h1>What&#8217;s new in Blackboard?<\/h1>\n<h2>Links to Talis<\/h2>\n<p>This update fixes the issue with broken links to Talis Aspire Reading Lists from Blackboard course menus.<\/p>\n<h3>Reading lists for Spring term modules \u2013 information for Module Convenors<\/h3>\n<p>The Blackboard upgrade at the beginning of August 2017 introduced a bug which broke links from Blackboard course menus to Talis Aspire reading lists.<\/p>\n<p>To deal with this issue, these broken links were automatically hidden in course menus to prevent confusion for students.<\/p>\n<p>Following the most recent upgrade, if\u00a0you want to use a Reading List\u00a0link on your Blackboard course menu you will need to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Configure the Reading List link in the Blackboard course to point to your 2017-18 list.<br \/>\nSee how to do this at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.reading.ac.uk\/reading-lists\/staff\/blackboard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/libguides.reading.ac.uk\/reading-lists\/staff\/blackboard<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Un-hide the Reading List link on the course menu:\n<ul>\n<li>Hover over the link, click the \u2018Reading List menu item options\u2019 button that appears.<\/li>\n<li>Click \u2018Show Link\u2019 from the menu. (See screenshot below)\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bb.reading.ac.uk\/bbcswebdav\/xid-8335859_4\" alt=\"Make a course menu link visible to students\" \/><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">Make a course menu link visible to students<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Please continue to update reading lists for the 2017\/18 session, and remember to publish all lists that are still in draft. Until published, a list can\u2019t be seen by your students. For further information please contact your Liaison Librarian.<\/p>\n<p><em><br \/>\nPlease note that the problem described affects Blackboard courses where there is a single module reading list, with a link from the Blackboard course menu.<\/em>\u00a0<em>If a Blackboard course has\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.reading.ac.uk\/reading-lists\/staff\/blackboard#s-lib-ctab-10844671-1\"><em>multiple reading lists<\/em><\/a><em>, or module convenors have created links from Blackboard to\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.reading.ac.uk\/reading-lists\/staff\/blackboard#s-lib-ctab-10844671-2\"><em>specific sections<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0of a Talis list, these links will be inside a Blackboard content area, and were not affected by the Blackboard bug.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Portfolios<\/h2>\n<p>The upgrade fixes a number of bugs which affected Blackboard Portfolios. In particular,\u00a0when students include web links in their portfolio, this no longer causes an error for those trying to view the portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>For more on Portfolios, see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Assignments\/Portfolios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Assignments\/Portfolios<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Blackboard Assignments and Inline Grading<\/h2>\n<p>The upgrade was essential for us to make the move to\u00a0the new inline grading platform for Blackboard assignments which comes online in January. You will notice no difference now &#8211; our\u00a0transition is scheduled for the morning of Wednesday 10th January. Please see our post\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/2017\/12\/05\/changes-to-inline-grading-in-blackboard\/\">Changes to Inline Grading in Blackboard<\/a>\u00a0for more details &#8211; and, if you are currently marking work submitted to a Blackboard assignment, please note that all comments added using the current interface will be &#8220;burnt in&#8221; on 10th January (i.e. you will not be able to edit or delete them once we have made the change).<\/p>\n<h2>Student view of Grades<\/h2>\n<p>One slight niggle with the new Blackboard version: when students go to My Grades, all grades are shown to five decimal places &#8211; so a mark of 55 will display as 55.00000<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not incorrect but, equally, it&#8217;s not particularly helpful.\u00a0Hopefully this feature will\u00a0be addressed\u00a0when we next upgrade\u00a0in the summer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/12\/My-Grades-showing-5-decimal-places.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3444\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/12\/My-Grades-showing-5-decimal-places.png\" alt=\"My Grades showing 5 decimal places\" width=\"800\" height=\"362\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you have\u00a0any\u00a0queries, please log them\u00a0via the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uor.topdesk.net\/tas\/public\/login\/form\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>IT Self-Service portal<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last night&#8217;s upgrade completed successfully, and the system was made available to users again at around 10.30 this morning.
