{"id":3481,"date":"2018-01-09T16:40:20","date_gmt":"2018-01-09T16:40:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/?p=3481"},"modified":"2018-01-09T16:40:20","modified_gmt":"2018-01-09T16:40:20","slug":"changes-to-the-inline-grading-interface-for-blackboard-assignments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/2018\/01\/09\/changes-to-the-inline-grading-interface-for-blackboard-assignments\/","title":{"rendered":"Changes to the inline grading interface for Blackboard Assignments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As mentioned in a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/2017\/12\/05\/changes-to-inline-grading-in-blackboard\/\">previous blog post<\/a>, there are a few changes being introduced this week to the interface used when marking work submitted to a Blackboard Assignment.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Please note &#8211; this change does not affect Turnitin assignments, only Blackboard assignments.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0new Box marking interface will go live at 8 a.m. this Wednesday, 10th January.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There may be a brief period when papers submitted to a Blackboard assignment do not display inside Blackboard &#8211; at this time you will see a message saying &#8220;this file is being converted&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2018\/01\/Blackboard-Assignment-please-wait-message.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3538\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2018\/01\/Blackboard-Assignment-please-wait-message.png\" alt=\"Blackboard Assignment - please wait message\" width=\"266\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once the transition to the new Box interface is complete, you may sometimes still see\u00a0this\u00a0message when opening a submission.<\/p>\n<p>If you experience this, just press your browser&#8217;s Refresh \/ Reload button (F5). This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bb.reading.ac.uk\/bbcswebdav\/xid-9430295_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">list of supported filetypes<\/a> shows which files can be viewed, and which annotated.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that, at present, there are a few common file types &#8211; notably Excel and RTF files &#8211; which it is not possible to annotate directly in Blackboard.<\/p>\n<p>Box, the third party company which provides the viewing\/marking interface, are making constant improvements to their service, so additional functionality is being added on an ongoing basis &#8211; and\u00a0Blackboard\u00a0are working with Box to see that desired improvements are delivered as early as possible. Blackboard have also emphasised\u00a0that Box provides<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"Paragraph SCXW234433377\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW234433377\" lang=\"EN-US\">support for significantly more file types, including audio, video, and image formats<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"Paragraph SCXW234433377\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW234433377\" lang=\"EN-US\">rore responsive browser support for accessing documents on any device across mobile browsers\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"Paragraph SCXW234433377\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW234433377\" lang=\"EN-US\">a\u00a0more modern, cleaner UI that more seamlessly blends with Blackboard Learn<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"SCXW234433377\"><span class=\"Paragraph SCXW234433377\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW234433377\" lang=\"EN-US\">Additionally, Box\u00a0is one of the world&#8217;s largest SaaS-based content management services, and as a result the New Box View service includes compliance with the strictest security and compliance standards<\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW234433377\" lang=\"EN-US\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>What will happen to feedback previously provided using Crocodoc?<\/h1>\n<p>The most important thing to know is that\u00a0<strong>all feedback left using Crocodoc (the previous marking interface) will still be available when we move to Box<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The feedback will continue to be visible \u2013 to both staff and students \u2013 within Blackboard, and when the marked paper is downloaded as a PDF.<\/p>\n<p>Please note however that,<strong>\u00a0once we move to Box, annotations made using Crocodoc are \u201cburnt in\u201d, and cannot be edited or deleted.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3388\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3388\" style=\"width: 575px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/12\/Comments-left-in-Crocodoc-after-move-to-Box.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3388 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/12\/Comments-left-in-Crocodoc-after-move-to-Box.png\" alt=\"Annotations added using Crocodoc, after the transition to Box\" width=\"575\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Annotations added using Crocodoc, after the transition to Box<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3385\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3385\" style=\"width: 575px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/12\/Feedback-provided-in-Crocodoc-after-conversion-to-Box-downloaded-PDF-viewed-in-Acrobat.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3385 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/12\/Feedback-provided-in-Crocodoc-after-conversion-to-Box-downloaded-PDF-viewed-in-Acrobat.png\" alt=\"Annotations added using Crocodoc, downloaded as a PDF, after the transition to Box\" width=\"575\" height=\"294\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3385\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Annotations added using Crocodoc, downloaded as a PDF, after the transition to Box<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Important notice for staff marking work\u00a0submitted in December and early January:<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In accordance with University policy, feedback on assignments where the submission deadline fell on or before 8th\u00a0December\u00a0(the last day of UG term), should have been made available to students by Tuesday 9th\u00a0January.<\/p>\n<p>However we are aware that there are some Blackboard assignments \u2013 particularly those set up for late submission after the due date \u2013 where our move to Box falls within the 15 day turnaround period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are still marking work using the Crocodoc interface<\/strong>, please ensure that any annotations made on or before 9th\u00a0January are in their final version \u2013 i.e. make sure that your annotations do not require further editing before they become visible to students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1>What is affected \/ what is not affected<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>This change affects only\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/support-blackboard\/blackboard-support-staff-assessment\/blackboard-support-staff-assignment-tool\/\">Blackboard assignments<\/a>. Turnitin assignments are not affected.<\/li>\n<li>This change affects only annotations made using the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bb.reading.ac.uk\/bbcswebdav\/xid-4905495_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inline grading<\/a>\u00a0features.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0<strong>does not<\/strong>\u00a0affect\n<ul>\n<li>feedback provided via an uploaded feedback file<\/li>\n<li>feedback typed into the \u2018Feedback to Learner\u2019 area<\/li>\n<li>student Grades<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Switching to the new interface is a relatively quick process, and we do not expect it to cause any disruption to students submitting work, or to the Blackboard service as a whole.
