{"id":4407,"date":"2019-02-12T15:32:08","date_gmt":"2019-02-12T15:32:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/?p=4407"},"modified":"2019-02-12T15:32:08","modified_gmt":"2019-02-12T15:32:08","slug":"students-scanning-handwritten-work-for-submission-to-turnitin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/2019\/02\/12\/students-scanning-handwritten-work-for-submission-to-turnitin\/","title":{"rendered":"Students scanning handwritten work for submission to Turnitin"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Who&nbsp;does this affect?<\/h1>\n<p><strong>This is an important message for any staff who require their students to scan handwritten work \u2013 for example Mathematical or Scientific equations \u2013 and submit this to Turnitin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is likely to be relevant in subject areas such as Mathematics, Economics, Meteorology and the Sciences, and possibly on some Language courses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When setting up a Turnitin assignment, it is possible to choose the \u2018Accept any file type\u2019 option, and students should then be able to submit files which won\u2019t generate a Similarity Report, for instance a PDF containing only scanned images.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, however, issues have arisen for<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>students attempting to submit files containing scanned work<\/li>\n<li>staff wishing to mark such work using Turnitin Feedback Studio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These issues have been raised with Turnitin Support, by us and by TEL staff at other Universities, and we are awaiting their response.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>What can we do to avoid problems?<\/h1>\n<p>If you require students to submit scanned work to Turnitin, the key thing is to <strong>tell them to include at least 20 words of typed text<\/strong> in their Word document or PDF.<\/p>\n<p>You may wish to provide a standard coversheet as a prompt, to make sure students do this.<\/p>\n<p>We have put together this page to provide guidance to students: <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel-support-for-students\/2019\/02\/12\/turnitin-submit-scanned-handwritten-work\/\">Turnitin: Submit Scanned \/ Handwritten Work<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you, or your students, need additional guidance, please contact the TEL team via <a href=\"mailto:it@reading.ac.uk\">it@reading.ac.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Who&nbsp;does this affect?
