{"id":4607,"date":"2015-12-18T14:09:58","date_gmt":"2015-12-18T14:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/?p=795"},"modified":"2015-12-18T14:09:58","modified_gmt":"2015-12-18T14:09:58","slug":"displaying-non-secure-content-in-blackboard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/2015\/12\/18\/displaying-non-secure-content-in-blackboard\/","title":{"rendered":"Displaying &#8216;non-secure&#8217; content in Blackboard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do you add <strong>presentations<\/strong>, <strong>video<\/strong>, <strong>images<\/strong> or <strong>audio<\/strong>\u00a0that are<strong>\u00a0stored on\u00a0external websites<\/strong>\u00a0into your modules on Blackboard using <strong>embed code<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>If you include resources or content from <strong>certain websites using embed code<\/strong>, then recent improvements to browser security settings can affect how this\u00a0content can be viewed and <strong>prevents it from automatically displaying in Blackboard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Internet browsers, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer, have improved their security settings for what is described as\u00a0\u2018mixed content\u2019. <strong>Browsers now prevent \u2018non-secure\u2019 content that is stored on other websites being viewed in \u2018secure\u2019 websites<\/strong> such as Blackboard.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Bb-content-missing.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-800\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Bb-content-missing.jpg\" alt=\"Bb-content-missing\" width=\"500\" height=\"363\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There isn&#8217;t necessarily a problem with the content, the browser is are just being careful and it\u00a0<strong>only happens with some content from particular websites<\/strong>, for example <strong>YouTube <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">is not<\/span> affected<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How can I tell this is happening?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>You can tell when this happens if there is a blank space where the content should be displaying<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To make the content display<\/strong> you will need to prompt your browser to show the content. Your students will also need to do this and the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bb.reading.ac.uk\/bbcswebdav\/xid-7654493_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">help guide shows them what to do<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If this issue does occur, you can direct your students to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bb.reading.ac.uk\/bbcswebdav\/xid-7654493_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">help guide<\/a> that describes\u00a0how to allow the content to display.<\/p>\n<h2>Why does this happen?<\/h2>\n<p>This issue occurs when external content embedded into Blackboard is stored on a website which has a web address that starts with http:\/\/.<strong>\u00a0A website with an http:\/\/ address is classed as a &#8216;non-secure<\/strong>&#8216; website. <strong>Blackboard is a &#8216;secure&#8217; website, with a web address that starts with https:\/\/<\/strong>.\u00a0Because of these different security levels, the browser blocks the non-secure content from displaying.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you add presentations, video, images or audio\u00a0that are\u00a0stored on\u00a0external websites\u00a0into your modules on Blackboard using embed code?
