Essential advice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This advice is only relevant\u00a0to the\u00a0<strong>Blackboard\u00a0assignment tool<\/strong> feature called &#8216;Delegated\u00a0Marking&#8217;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Are you thinking about using delegated marking?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Do you have an assignment to mark where delegated marking has been set up?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following\u00a0advice should help you <strong>avoid issues<\/strong> that\u00a0have arisen, based\u00a0on recent queries we have received.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Is delegated marking really necessary?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It is <strong>not always necessary to enable\u00a0delegated marking<\/strong>, even if you have multiple markers or the work needs to be moderated. It is<strong> only required where all staff are marking online<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>e-Marking and moderation\u00a0can\u00a0often be accommodated more easily without using the delegated marking feature. For example, <strong>double marking and moderation can be facilitated through standard marking features, using\u00a0the\u00a0&#8216;Feedback to Learners&#8217; and the &#8216;Instructors Notes&#8217; fields<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Delegated marking can be helpful if you have\u00a0<strong>large cohorts of students<\/strong> and sets of students need to be <strong>allocated to different markers<\/strong> or if you need to undertake <strong>blind double marking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Check with\u00a0a member of the TEL team, if you are not sure if delegated marking is required.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What can I do if delegated marking has been enabled but isn&#8217;t required?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If students have not yet started submitted their work, then it is possible to change the assignment settings and un-tick the option for delegated marking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DO NOT un-tick the option for delegated marking if students have submitted assignments<\/strong> or the work has started to be marked. This will result in the assignments or the feedback disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Make sure staff who are marking the assignment know delegated marking has been enabled.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>All staff\u00a0will need to know\u00a0what implications the\u00a0delegated marking feature\u00a0has on the marking process in terms of\u00a0what they can\u00a0expect to see and do in the Grade Centre. Refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bb.reading.ac.uk\/bbcswebdav\/xid-4392317_4\">guide on delegated marking<\/a> for details.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>When should you assign\u00a0markers?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Only assign\u00a0markers when you know for certain who is marking<\/strong> the work and\u00a0how student assignments will need to be distributed amongst them.\u00a0Markers can be assigned\u00a0after the assignment has been set up and after students have submitted their work but this should be done once.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>DO NOT remove assigned markers once\u00a0students have started submitting work\u00a0or when marking has begun. <\/strong><\/span>This can prevent work from being marked online.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Allocating students&#8217; assignments\u00a0between markers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>DO NOT change\u00a0how assignments have been allocated between\u00a0markers once this has been selected<\/strong> <strong>and students have started submitting work.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Editing the settings can result in the following unexpected behaviour:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assignments not been allocated correctly,<\/li>\n<li>Markers are prevented\u00a0from being able to mark assignments,<\/li>\n<li>Assignments and\/or feedback disappears.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Using &#8216;Random Set&#8217; &#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">DO NOT edit<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> <strong>(add or remove) markers<\/strong><\/span> once students&#8217; assignments have been allocated using this option. <strong>Avoid using this option.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Using &#8216;Groups&#8217; &#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">DO NOT change<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> <strong>the membership of Groups<\/strong><\/span> used to allocate marking once\u00a0marking has started. This will result in the\u00a0loss of feedback and prevent the student from seeing their feedback.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Using &#8216;All submissions&#8217;<\/strong> &#8211; \u00a0Additional markers can be added\u00a0at any time\u00a0where &#8216;All submissions&#8217; is being used.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What if I need to add a marker after the assignments have been allocated?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Please speak to a member of the TEL team for advice before making any changes to the settings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: It is possible for the instructor managing the marking process to\u00a0add an additional marker to mark a piece of work from\u00a0the &#8216;Needs Reconciliation&#8217; page and this can be used to overcome issues around marking allocation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This advice is only relevant\u00a0to the\u00a0Blackboard\u00a0assignment tool feature called &#8216;Delegated\u00a0Marking&#8217;.
