Are you marking coursework and returning feedback to your students online?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This information will be helpful to academic and administrative staff who are involved in e-marking<\/strong> (e-grading and e-feedback).<\/p>\n

It covers essential advice on what to do and be aware of.\u00a0Topics covered:<\/p>\n

    It includes advice on both the Blackboard Assignment and Turnitin tools.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    It is important that you are fully prepared before the University Christmas closure, as staff will not be available to provide support during this period.<\/p>\n

    Note that the University does not<\/u> require staff to mark online this year. We recommend that you only start e-marking if you have received advice and undertaken staff development.<\/p>\n

    Important information you need to know:<\/p>\n

      Preparing to mark online<\/strong><\/h1>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
      Advice<\/strong><\/td>\nSupport and resources<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
      Make sure you know how the assignment is going to be marked<\/strong> and how the feedback should be returned.<\/td>\nContact the module convenor well in advance of the assessment deadline if you are unsure.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
      Check that your Internet browser is up-to-date<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
        \n
      • Recommended browsers: Chrome<\/strong> or Firefox<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • Internet Explorer: Turn off \u2018compatibility view\u2019<\/li>\n
      • Do not use the new Microsoft Edge browser (Windows 10)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n
      		\n
      Familiarise yourself with the online support guides for e-marking, using either:<\/p>\n
        \n
      • Turnitin – GradeMark<\/li>\n
      • Blackboard Assignment \u2013 Inline Grading<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n
      		Assessment Guides<\/a> are available under the \u2018Support for Staff\u2019 tab in Blackboard.<\/p>\n
      Assignments with multiple markers<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
        \n
      • Blackboard Assignment:<\/strong> Check if Delegated marking<\/strong> is being used for the assignment. This will affect how the marking process is handled and what you can see.<\/li>\n
      • Turnitin Assignment only:<\/strong> Check if the \u2018Turnitin Assignment by Group<\/strong>\u2019 option is being used to allocate assignments to markers. You will need to access assignments using this feature if it is.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Marking assignments<\/strong><\/h1>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Blackboard Assignment tool<\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
        Advice<\/strong><\/td>\nSupport and resources<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
        If you are using a \u2018No Points\u2019 Rubric<\/strong> (non-scoring), make sure you complete the rubric before entering a mark to grade the assignment.<\/td>\nKnown Issue:<\/a> Saving the \u2018No Points\u2019 rubric resets the grade to \u20180\u2019 and means you will need to re-enter the mark.<\/p>\n

        Workaround<\/strong>: Complete the rubric first before entering your mark and make a note of the mark if you need to subsequently edit the rubric.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

        Use<\/strong> the \u2018Save Draft\u2019 button<\/strong> when marking an assignment, if you want to keep the assignment listed in \u2018Needs Marking\u2019. This will let you that easily find it again to continue editing the mark or comments.<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
        The Blackboard marking session for an assignment expires after one hour<\/strong>, so remember to save your feedback and comments before the session times-out.<\/td>\nMarking a Blackboard assignment online using Blackboard\u2019s in-built tool (Inline Grading)<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
        \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Anonymous marking<\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

        Make sure you only grade the last attempt <\/strong>a student has made.<\/p>\n
          \n
        • If the assignment submission has been set-up to allow multiple attempts, all of the attempts are shown separately<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
        • When you have an assignment open, you can see if there are other attempts by the same student in the right-hand Grading panel<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

           <\/td>\n

        		<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
        If staff want to see the marks given for the assignment in the Grade Centre column after marking is completed<\/strong> but before the 15 day turnaround has been reached, then it is possible to lift anonymity without affecting the release of marks to students.<\/td>\nSee how to disable anonymous marking in the Blackboard Assignment How to mark anonymously guide.<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
        If you need to mark anonymously and this has not been set up on your assignment<\/strong> (and students have already submitted their assignments), you can mark work using the \u2018Grade with Usernames Hidden\u2019 option in the Grade Centre as a workaround.<\/td>\nGrading with Usernames Hidden<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
        If you want to download anonymous assignments<\/strong> to mark offline<\/strong>, you will need to:<\/p>\n
          \n
        • Record the attempt ID on the downloaded printed file,<\/li>\n
        • Record the attempt ID in the Grading Notes for the online assignment.<\/li>\n
        • Complete the marking process before anonymity is lifted if you intend to provide feedback online.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          These actions are required as the attempt ID is removed when anonymity is lifted.<\/p>\n

           <\/td>\n

        		<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
        If marking and the return of feedback is paper-based<\/strong>, you can choose to remove the \u2018mark anonymously\u2019 setting for the assignment.<\/td>\nCheck with the module convenor or SDTL before changing anonymous marking settings.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

         <\/p>\n

        Turnitin<\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
        Advice<\/strong><\/td>\nSupport and resources<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
        Always edit the mark for an assignment in the Turnitin document viewer.<\/strong><\/p>\n
          \n
        • Marks are only sent to the Grade Centre from Turnitin. If a mark for an assignment is changed in the Grade Centre this will not<\/u> change the mark shown on the paper in Turnitin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

           <\/td>\n

        		<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
        We recommend accessing assignments from the Turnitin Inbox<\/strong>.Go to your module > Control Panel > Course Tools > Turnitin Assignments<\/strong> > click on the title of the assignment.Click the \u2018Roster Sync\u2019<\/strong> link if you don\u2019t see all of your students listed in the Turnitin Inbox.<\/td>\nUse Roster Sync to show all of the students in a Turnitin assignment<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
        Do not have the same individual student\u2019s assignment open in different browsers<\/strong> or computers (or iPad app) at the same time.\u00a0<\/strong>This can result in Turnitin behaving unexpectedly and the loss of any feedback entered.<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
        GradeMark will time-out after 30 minutes of inactivity<\/strong>. ‘Inactivity’ means not pressing on any buttons within the document viewer.\u00a0Note<\/strong>: Typing into the General Comments box or scrolling up and down to read an assignment is not<\/u><\/strong> detected as \u2018activity\u2019.<\/td>\nUnless the session has timed out, feedback, comments and marks are automatically saved as they are entered. This includes:<\/p>\n
          \n
        • Rubrics & Grading Forms<\/li>\n
        • Comments placed directly on to the paper (e.g. QuickMarks)<\/li>\n
        • Feedback entered in the General Comments<\/strong> box<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
        If you cannot see the marks for a Turnitin assignment in the Grade Centre<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
          \n
        • Anonymous assignments<\/strong>: Marks are not sent to the Grade Centre until the Post Date is reached.<\/li>\n
        • Use the \u2018Sync Grades\u2019<\/strong> link to push marks into the Grade Centre if they have not yet been synchronised.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Anonymous marking<\/strong>: Check the requirements and limitations when marking anonymously in Turnitin.<\/td>\nAnonymous marking in Turnitin<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

          Moderation<\/strong><\/h1>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          The marker will need to inform the moderator once they have finished their online marking<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
          Where marking is done<\/strong> anonymously<\/strong> and the moderator needs to see the spread of marks given to the assignments<\/strong>, you can use the \u2018View Grade History\u2019 option to view all of the marks by Attempt ID.\u2018View Grade History\u2019 can be found under the options menu for an assignment in the Grade Centre.<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
          The \u2018Reconcile Grades<\/strong>\u2019 option will need to be used if Delegated Marking has been enabled <\/strong>for the assignment to produce a final mark that students\u2019 can see.\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Students will not see their mark and feedback until this is done, even if you have un-hidden the Grade Centre column for the assignment.<\/td>\nDelegated marking using Blackboard Assignments<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

           <\/p>\n

          Turnitin<\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

          There are no in-built facilities to moderate online using Turnitin.Aspects of the moderation process will need to take place outside of Turnitin<\/td>\nScenarios for anonymous and double marking, including moderation<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
          Do not have the same individual student\u2019s assignment open in different browsers<\/strong> or computers (or iPad app) at the same time.\u00a0<\/strong>This can result in Turnitin behaving unexpectedly and the loss of any feedback entered.<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

            You will need to manually un-hide the column in the Grade Centre<\/strong> to make the feedback available to students.Make sure the \u2018My Grades\u2019 link is listed in the left-hand<\/strong> menu of your module to allow students to access their feedback.<\/td>\n\n
