Varied Assessment
There are a number of reasons why it is encouraged to offer varied assessment methods:
- Inclusivity. Different methods of assessment may advantage or disadvantage different students or groups of students, for various reasons. By offering varied assessment methods, a greater number of students will be more able to demonstrate they have met the learning outcomes.
- Engagement. When students are offered more choice in the assessment methods used, they are more likely to be engaged in the process of assessment.
- Skill development. Different methods of assessment promote development of different skills. By offering a variety of assessment methods, we can ensure that students develop and demonstrate a range of skills.
When offering varied assessment methods, it is important that assessment literacy of students and academic staff are considered so that there is no risk of confusion, negating the impact of offering varied assessment.
