This article relates to in-class presentations for assessment which have a recorded element. For student-created video assessment, please see our guide on submitting video assignments to YuJa.
You may be required to have recordings of student presentations for assessment purposes. When approaching creation of these recordings, you can consider two different approaches:
- Staff record students
- Student record themselves
Each have pros and cons associated with them and are collated in a table at the end of this article.
Videos which have been created for assessment should be tagged as Assessment in YuJa (via More > Metadata > Select [Assessment] > Save Metadata).
for retention purposes.
Staff record students
Where staff initiate recordings of student presentations, decisions on how to record may vary depending on the circumstances in which the students are presenting and what is required of the recording afterwards. Any videos recorded by staff using the YuJa Software Capture application will be available in the staff member’s My Media area after recording.
Once a video is in a staff member’s My Media area, they are able to embed the video into the Grade Centre or marking notes area of a Blackboard Assignment (or equivalent Journal, Blog, etc) using the YuJa Media Chooser, use the Share feature to make videos available to other members of staff, or share a direct link to the video for any moderation or additional marking purposes.
Where multiple individuals or groups are presenting in the same session, there is a choice to record the entire session, pausing between presentations, or to stop/start the YuJa Software Capture application between presentations. You may wish to consider how the resulting video will need to be reviewed (by External Examiners, for example) or whether the recording will need to be made available to students afterwards.
Multiple presentations in one video
Suitable for:
- Individual or group presentations
- Students presenting to an audience in a timetabled session
- Students presenting one after the other in a short time frame
- Videos that do not need to be shared individually afterwards (would require editing)
Individual videos for each presentation
Suitable for:
- Individual examinations or presentations
- Group presentations
- ECF/late presentations happening outside the context of a timetabled session
- Videos that need to be shared individually afterwards (no editing required)
Students record themselves
Students recording themselves requires additional work from students (and possible intervention from staff), who may not be familiar with YuJa. The resultant recordings will be saved in the student’s My Media area in YuJa and, subsequently, shared with staff either by direct link or using the Share feature .
Students will also be required to add the Assessment tag in YuJa when uploading their videos..
Where multiple students are presenting in one session, you may also want to consider time taken to log on and off a device in the classroom.
