How to manage the marks for Gradescope exams and other assessments where students can choose which questions to answer.
e.g. Students answer 2 out of 4 questions.
- A mark will need to be entered in Gradescope for each question – including those not answered.
- If using Positive marking enter 0 for the unanswered questions.
- If using Negative marking enter -n for the unanswered questions, where n = the max score for that question.
- The Points Possible for the exam as a whole will be more than 100, but this won’t matter when marks are posted to Blackboard, as long as each student has the right score.
You can set the Points Possible for the Blackboard Grade Centre column to be 100.
Example 1 Homework type
4 questions each worth 50 marks. Students answer 2 out of 4.
Points possible for the Gradescope exam = 200, but max points for each student = 100.
Set the Blackboard column as Points Possible = 100, and students will then have correct % score.
Example 2 Online assignment
Part A MCQ (total points = 40)
Part B answer 2 out of 4 (each answer = 30)
Points Possible in Gradescope = 160, but max points for each student = 100.
Set the Blackboard column as Points Possible = 100, and students will then have correct % score.
Example 3 Online assignment not marked out of 100
Part A MCQ (total points = 30)
Part B answer 2 out of 4 (each answer = 50)
Points Possible in Gradescope = 230, but max points for each student = 130.
Set the Blackboard column as Points Possible = 130, and students will then have correct % score.
