Internal Moderation

Introduction

This page indicates how to conduct internal moderation of students’ work that has been submitted online to either a Blackboard or Turnitin assignment. The step-by-step guides describe what each role needs to do in the process (first marker, moderator and programme administrator). The steps you need to take are different depending on whether:

  • It is a Blackboard or Turnitin assignment.
  • It is marked and moderated anonymously,
  • Moderation takes place before or after the marks are released to students in Blackboard. (The standard 15 working day turnaround time to mark work is used as the indicative timescale.)

Be aware:

  • There is a custom moderation process guide for each scenario to handle differences.
  • The removal of anonimity happens automatically when marks are released, in both Blackboard Assignments and Turnitin .
  • Some moderation processes require careful and accurate recording of ID numbers when assignments are anonymous and be systematic when using these.

The tables below indicate how well the features in each assignment tool supports moderation based on the combination of different options This may influence your decision about when moderation takes place (particularly if it is anonymous).
