Flexible Training

The key aspect of this programme is flexibility. Students can attend specific modules according to their individual professional needs and working environment. Some modules hone skills and knowledge in a specific area (e.g. older people, trauma etc.) and others cover a diverse range of disorders in less detail. Each module holds a University credit evaluation, and on successful completion, these credits can be accumulated towards a University of Reading qualification in Professional Development in Evidence-Based Psychological Treatment.

Accumulated credits award:

  • Certificate: comprises 3 modules (60 credits)
  • Diploma: comprises 6 modules (120 credits)

Introduction to Evidence-Based Psychological Treatment

This 4-day module will provide a thorough background to the fundamentals of cognitive behavioural therapy, and the role of evidence-based interventions within the NHS. No previous CBT knowledge is needed.

On completion of this module students will have a detailed understanding of the generic approach to CBT, and be ready to be trained in disorder specific models and interventions.

Accreditation of prior learning (APEL)

If students feel that they have sufficient CBT knowledge, they can elect to sit our APEL examination in lieu of studying the PYMIN1 module. The assessment comprises short open-ended essay style questions to assess the student’s ability to comprehend, critique and implement fundamental CBT premises and interventions. Students will have 90 minutes to complete the exam.

Treatment and Models of Anxiety

This module comprises workshops equating to five full days on evidence-based psychological theory and treatments delivered by recognised national and international experts in the field. These workshops will include topics on relatively straightforward, specific disorders that occur commonly in clinical practice such as Social Anxiety and Panic Disorder. Students learn how to critically evaluate evidence-based psychological theories and treatment.

Treatments and Models of Depression

This module comprises workshops equating to five full days on evidence-based psychological theory and treatments given by recognised national and international experts in the field. These workshops cover the evidence-based theory for a range of psychological disorders and more complex cases (e.g., with multiple co-occurring diagnoses).

Treatments and Models of Complex Presentations

The aim of this module is to enable students to use advanced evidence-based psychological treatments for cases with multiple psychological disorders, and to train students in the use advanced evidence-based psychological approaches that cut across specific diagnoses (i.e. transdiagnostic disorders).

Clinical Practice with Anxiety/ Depression

This comprises 2 modules (PYMCPA and PYMCPD) and involves weekly Clinical Skills and Supervision during term time. The aim of these modules is to train clinicians to implement evidence-based psychological treatment to a high standard with increasingly complex cases. To identify the complicating factors that are preventing treatment progress using formal review methods. Also to train clinicians in the effective dissemination of evidence-based psychological treatments.

Foundation skills for working with trauma and PTSD

This 4-day module will cover the core knowledge and skills that participants will need in order to work with clients who experience PTSD (following type I trauma). Participants will gain an understanding of psychological theories and of the current evidence-based interventions for treating PSTD. In particular, participants will gain skills in the assessment and formulation of PTSD as well as in specific therapeutic techniques in working with PTSD. Emphasis will also be placed on students’ own self-care when working with highly distressed clients.

Advanced skills for working with complex trauma and specific populations

This module has a focus on helping participants to develop advanced skills for working with complex (type II) trauma. The focus will be on helping students developed advanced skills in working with specific client populations, such as refugees and asylum seekers, veterans etc., including those who have experienced complex and enduring (type II) trauma. Special considerations (such as ethical, lifespan and cultural issues) and evidence-based practice for these clients will be covered. Workshops will also be aimed at developing specific advanced techniques, such as imagery re-scripting.

Certificate in Traumatic Stress Studies

By following and being assessed on the Introductory module, Foundation Trauma and Advanced Trauma modules within 2 academic years, students will be awarded a Certificate in Traumatic Stress Studies. Students have 2 years to complete this qualification.
