How can Speech & Language Therapy help?

At the University, we work using the stammering and cluttering guidance 2025 from The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

Therapy will involve working in partnership with the client to jointly work towards goals for change. It will involve supporting the client to gain an in-depth understanding of their stammering and their responses to it. It will include exploring the influence speaking environments and society have had on the impact of their stammering. Therapy may involve working towards reducing concealment of stammering and moving towards less effortful, easier communication. Therapy may sometimes involve working directly on speech change.

What do we do?

We offer blocks of one to one sessions:

  • During October to December
  • You will usually come for 6-8 weekly sessions
  • One to one therapy is offered on a case by case basis due to only one therapist working with adults who stammer. Sessions are only held on a Tuesday during Semesters.
  • January to April we hold monthly support group meetings only

What happens in the sessions?

  • We follow guidance for working with adults who stammer from our professional body The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs).
  • Therapy is collaborative, with you deciding what you want you want to work on. Working solely on speech strategies is rare, as for many people who stammer, speaking also involves feelings and challenges around stammering, so often therapy has a focus on both, but you ultimately work with us for us to support your needs. However, the focus of therapy is ultimately for you to live well with your stammer, rather than to ‘cure’ it or eliminate it, gaining control perhaps over your speech and your thoughts and feelings around stammering also.

 Can we see you?

We see adults (18 years +) who can say ‘yes’ to these things

  • Yes, if you have had a stammer since childhood
  • Yes, if you are able to commit to the sessions that you have arranged with the SLT, we are limited to only offering therapy on Tuesdays during term time
  • Yes if you are interested in finding a community to support you via attendance at a group

We can’t see you if you have recently started to stammer or you acquired your stammer as an adult. You will need to ask your GP to refer you to Speech and Language Therapy on the NHS.

How to join or refer someone

You can refer yourself to this group or for one to one therapy. We are limited on places and it is important that you read all of the information here before you decide whether we are what you are looking for right now.
