Marking a Blackboard Assignment

The Blackboard Marking interface allows you to mark your students’ work inline, giving written feedback, annotations and a grade. You can swiftly move from one student to the next, filtering by all submissions or by Needs Marking.

Access an Assignment

In the assignment submission list, select a student to mark. This will open the marking view.

Give Marks and Feedback

There are three ways to add marks.

  • Add marks manually
  • Add marks via the rubric
  • Override marks in zero point rubric

Add summary feedback

There are three main opportunities to provide summary feedback.

Summary feedback in marking screen

In the marking screen it is possible to add summary feedback in the Overall Feedback section. Feedback is given via the text editor, which offers the full array of formatting options including attaching documents, and providing audio or video feedback.

When you have added or changed any feedback you will need to Save Changes.

Group feedback to individuals

In group assignments this feedback will be given to the group. You are able to scroll between the group members to give individual feedback.

Group and individual feedback toggles in feedback area.

Summary feedback in submissions tab

In the Submission tab, where all the submissions are listed, it is possible to add summary feedback in the Feedback & Notes section. Feedback is given via the text editor, which offers the full array of formatting options including attaching documents etc and providing audio or video feedback.

Feedback & Notes gives you the option to add additional overall feedback to students and private notes to markers.

  • (a) Mark – shows mark, three dots menu option to post
  • (b) Feedback for student – provide feedback using full editor
  • (c) Marker Notes – allows private notes to be added (not visible to students

For further information on how these feedback routes are viewed by students see our guide “When can students see my feedback?“.

Assigning individual marks to students

When marking group assignments, it is sometimes necessary to assign different marks to individuals in a group, rather than one overall mark that applies to every group member. If you need to do this, first navigate back to the submissions page. Then, click on the blue link underneath the group title.

This opens the list of group membership. You can then manually type individual marks for each student into the grade pill next to each students name.

Move Between Student Submissions

When you have finished one student paper, you can move between the student submissions in a number of ways.

Use the Next Student tab to move to the next markable paper. Or, go back to the previous paper.

For group submissions, the interface is slightly different as you move between groups rather than individual submissions.

You can also work down the list of students on the left of the page. Clicking a student will open their paper for marking or editing.

The same is true for anonymous assignments.

Marking anonomous submissions

You can filter this by All Marking Statuses or Needs Marking using the drop down menu. Needs Marking allows you to see just the attempts which still need marks and feedback.

Identifying Late Submissions

You can identify late submissions via the “Submissions” tab. Look for the late tag next to the submissions time and date stamp. You can also use CTRL+F to search for “late” and cycle through each submission with a late tag.

When marking assignments, late submissions will also display a late tag in the marking screen.

Posting Marks

Posting Marks makes the marks and feedback available to students. This option is available in the marking screen, submissions tab and the Gradebook.

  • For formative assignments you can post marks as you complete marking each paper or at a specific date
  • For summative assignments the programme administrator will post the marks on the agreed release marks to students date (usually the 15 day turnaround time).

Please see our guide Post Student Marks for more details.
