Marking a Discussion

To mark discussions you can get open this discussion page via the Discussion tab and Gradebook.

In the Discussion page you may use the tabs Student Activity and Marks & Participation to oversee and mark discussions.

Student Activity

During the time where the students are contributing to the discussions but the due date has not been reached it is possible to

  • Access the Discussion via Discussions tab
  • Contribute to Discussions
  • View Student’s engagement

The Student Activity tab will provide details on students’ participation in the discussion, it provides information on:

  • (a) Number of active students
  • (b) Average posts per student and word count
  • (c) Students who have not participated yet – a message can be set to these students via the message icon
  • (d) Responses most replied to
  • (e) Top participants

Marks & Participation

The Marks & Participation tab will open in the student list. Where the student status is Entry made, click on the number to mark to open the marking page.

In the marking page you will see the Discussion and marking options.

  • (f) The discussion will appear in the centre of the page with the selected student’s responses highlighted in purple.
  • (g) Discussion Analysis on the right-hand side will show analysis under the headings Critical Thinking and Word Variation
  • (h) Click on the rubric icon to mark using the rubric
  • (i) Click on the Plus icon to add feedback
  • (j) Click on the arrow to move on to the next student

Making with a Rubric

To mark with a Rubric click on the Rubric icon on the top right-hand corner (c).

A new Rubric panel will open on the right-hand side of the screen.

  • (k) Show descriptions – this option will show the descriptions for each criteria on the rubric.
  • (l) Select the level on the criteria, which the student’s work has met – this will add the score to the submission total.
  • (m) Submission score total from the rubric – if using a score of zero override this mark.

Add Marks and Feedback

To add feedback click on the plus sign (i). The feedback panel will open, and offer all the options available the the text editor.

Save feedback when ready.

Marking group discussions

Groups have separate channels and cannot see the other groups. Instructors can see all groups.
